The course is meant to contribute to reach the goals of the C.d.S. "Lettere". Moreover, it aims to provide an introduction to issues related to the complexity of language through continuous interdisciplinary considerations and references to fundamental moments in the history of the discipline.

Knowledges:
The course provides introductory knowledge of linguistics, retracing the main articulations of linguistic theory, and training students to technical consideration of a wide range of phenomena exemplified by European and non-European, ancient and modern languages. The course proceeds according to the exploration of the traditional levels of analysis of historical-natural languages (semiotics, phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics), and their possible interactions, both at the synchronic and diachronic level.

Skills:
Students will have to acquire a critical mastery of the theoretical issues discussed during the course and a complete ability to describe and analyze the linguistic phenomena examined during the lessons through an aptitude for explicit formalization and hypothetical reasoning.
