PHOTOGRAPHY APPLIED TO CULTURAL HERITAGE SEMINAR
Provide the students with theoretical knowledge, technical skills and methodologies required for the photographic documentation of Cultural Heritage. At the end of the course students will learn fundamental notions of the photographic technique, the use of the equipment and the appropriate methodologies of shooting aimed for the documentation of Archaeological and Historical-Artistic Heritage. Moreover they will learn the basic procedures of conservation and cataloguing of photography as a Cultural Heritage.
Analogic and digital photography theoretical and practical course organized in four thematic modules:
1 – History and evolution of the photographic technique.
2 – Photographic notions: equipment, materials and rules.
3 – Methods and techniques of photographic shooting of Archaeological and Historical-Artistic Heritage.
4 – Guidelines on the conservation and cataloguing of photographic material.
MODULE 1 – HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION
Studies and devices for image reproduction: from the camera obscura to the modern cameras / Evolution of the photographic technique: historical procedures and protagonists.
MODULE 2 – PHOTOGRAPHIC NOTIONS: EQUIPMENT, MATERIALS AND RULES
Cameras: basic elements and their functions / Cameras classification / Camera lenses classification / The exposure triangle: aperture, shutter speed and ISO / The depth of field / Characteristics of the light and the color / Lightning systems and photographic exposure reading / Photographic films: characteristics, formats and sensitivity.
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Characteristics of digital image: pixels, image resolution, depth of color, raster graphics and vector graphics, image files main formats / Types of digital cameras / Memory cards / White balance / Image acquisition by scanner / Digital files processing.
MODULE 3 – PHOTOGRAPHY FOR THE DOCUMENTATION OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC HERITAGE
Photographic shooting methodologies and techniques of the Archaeological and Historical-Artistic Heritage, with reference to the ICCD regulations for the photographic documentation of cataloguing sheets.
Photography of architectures and archaeological sites / Photography of the painted surfaces / Photography of the epigraphs, stamps and engravings / Photography of the statuary / Photography of the mosaics / Photography of the various classes of ceramics / Photography of the glass / Small objects photography: coins, gems, etc. / Books, prints, drawings and photographs reproduction / Photography of the archaeological excavation: perspective and planimetric shots; preparation of the photograpic area and insertion of shooting accessories in the frame (metric scale, slate, north arrow, stratigraphic unit tags).
MODULE 4 – “PHOTOGRAPHY AS CULTURAL HERITAGE”
Methods of identification of the main historical photographic procedures / Guidelines on the conservation of photographic material / Standards and softwares for the photographic cataloguing / ICCD F-Sheet and the general catalogue information system (SiGECweb)/ Some examples of public and private photographic archives.
Some of the course's subject matters will be developed through practical exercise: in Module 3 students will be shooting with digital camera (in the lab or outdoor) and will be making a final paper for the exam; in Module 4 students will be practicing the cataloguing techniques for photographic images stored in the DiSPuTer photographic Archive.
