Prerequisites:

Students are required to have knowledge of English at B2 Level, according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), in order to understand and assimilate the concepts
introduced during the course.
In order to undertake the exam, students must have passed the English Language and Translation exam II (2nd year) and English Mediation I.

Objectives

OBJECTIVES
In line with the CdS purposes, its professional profiles and employment opportunities, the course provides students with tools and methodologies enabling them to perform translation, interpreting and intercultural mediation tasks and to produce written texts in a foreign language.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
Students are expected to achieve a B2+ Level in the English Language, according to the CEFR (European Framework of Reference for Languages). Furthermore, they must acquire the necessary linguistic and communicative skills, and be familiar with the key issues related to intercultural and interlingual mediation in different contexts. The will have to apply translation strategies in specialized texts, demonstrate competence in contrastive analysis and metalinguistic awareness.

Equal results are expected in the field of linguistic mediation.

Contents

Module 1 (7CFU): Language and Translation.
This module aims to introduce students to some of the key concepts of translation theory (equivalence, functionalist and descriptive approaches, translation and culture). After an initial focus on translation-based text analysis, students will be shown how to apply translation strategies, instrument and resources (grammar books, dictionaries and corpora) in translating texts from English into Italian and from Italian into English, belonging to a variety of text types and genres.

LANGUAGE IMPROVEMENT CLASSES:
Activities aimed at developing reading, writing, listening and speaking skills at B2+ level.

Teaching Methods

The course includes the following activities:
1) Lectures held by the professor starting from November 2019. Mediation Classes will start in the second semester.
2) Tutorials and other activities held by the linguistic experts of the CLA, based on oral and written skills in order to strengthen the abilities for acquiring the B2+ Level.

EXAM ORGANISATION
The final exam consists of a written test and oral one. The written part is structured as follows:
1) Translation of two journalistic/political texts, one from Italian into English and the other from English into Italian;
2) Three open questions concerning topics of the texts analyzed during the course;
3) Assessment of proficiency in the English Language according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) at B2+ Level. The test is divided into specific parts, including comprehension exercises, textual analysis and a short written production.
Mediation module: oral exam consisting of a listening comprehension test, sight translation (from or into English), and dialogue interpreting.

METHODS OF ASSESSMENT
The written test is to be assessed in thirtieths, and the results will be published on the Department website. The final mark will be given after an oral test, to be taken in English, on the subject discussed during the course. To access the final oral test students must have passed the written text. Online registration is mandatory for both tests (via the ESSE 3 online platform).
Written tests are held on a regular basis only once for each exam session; oral tests take place twice for each of the three sessions (summer, autumn, extraordinary). Students who reach a solid linguistic and metalinguistic competence will obtain an excellent evaluation.

Non-attending students are invited to contact the professor during her weekly office hours; no alternative syllabus is however required. The course will be supported by extra activities organized by the Language Centre of the University (in classrooms, laboratories or online).
