To provide the student with the know-how about materials science needed for a better understanding of the operation of the equipment of the cardiac surgery department, with particular reference to the extra-corporeal circulation equipment.
D1 - Knowledge and understanding
The student, at the end of the course, will know the basic materials used in extracorporeal circulation equipment (CEC) and their main properties
D2 - Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
The student must be able to apply the acquired knowledge by rationally evaluating the mechanical properties of various materials (or families of materials) and the reasons for their use (or non-use) in CEC equipment
D3 - Autonomy of judgment
The student must be able to evaluate, choosing between the various
possibilities, the most suitable materials for a selected biomedical application
D4 - Communication skills
The student must be able, mastering the appropriate technical language, to
describe the functional characteristics of the various materials used in CEC machines
D5 - Learning skills
The student must be able to interpret and use technical manuals to make selections of specific components or applications, and to acquire new information about related innovative materials.
