Objectives

The student will have to acquire the knowledge related to the operation and management of the heart-lung machine during the CBP. Furthermore, you will have to acquire the knowledge related to the pathophysiological aspects of the CBP.

Contents

The course includes a description of the various components of the heart-lung machine, retracing the history of the development of the current components. Furthermore, the main monitoring and protocols (priming, hemodilution, hypothermia, cardioplegia) used during the cardio-pulmonary bypass (CBP) will be described. To this end, and to facilitate the student, some concepts relating to the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system will be recalled with particular attention to the main mechanisms underlying vascular alterations: endothelial function / dysfunction and role of nitric oxide (NO).

3. Endothelium and its functions in vascular homeostasis: role of Nitric Oxide (NO)
Endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis: role of oxidative stress and inflammation
4. Mechanisms underlying the development of vascular complications in various diseases, such as: hypertension, insulin resistance, diabetes, obesity and uremia. Evaluation of endothelial function: classical methods and development of new biomarkers
5. Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB): history
6. CPB: materials and devices
7. CPB: preparation of patients
8. CPB: Priming and Cardioplegia
9. Monitoring during CPB
10. CPB: hypothermia
11. CPB: acid-base balance
12. Outline on CPB weaning and arrest
