Objectives

LEARNING OUTCOMES
The learning objectives of the graduate programme in Clinical and Health Psychology include the development of B2 language skills in English with a focus on specialized vocabulary in the field of Psychology. At the end of the course, students will be expected to understand the main concepts of a discourse of a certain length and follow quite complex arguments; to understand narrative texts; to communicate in a sufficiently spontaneous and natural way so as to interact with native speakers; to express their opinions; to write clearly and articulately on a wide range of topics, including the specialized domain of Psychology.

ABILITIES
At the end of the course students will be expected to possess CEFR B2 (“Vantage”) competences in English. In addition, they will have acquired basic specialized vocabulary in the professional and scholarly fields of Psychology.

CRITICAL SKILLS AND SELF-ASSESSMENT
Students are expected to acquire language skills so as to express themselves clearly and correctly in English in both general and specialized situations. Students are also expected to develop adequate metalinguistic skills.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Students will be expected to understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics; to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible and without strain; to produce a clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue. Students will also be expected to apply these language skills to specialized communication in the scholarly and professional fields of psychology.

Contents

The course aims to train the students’ language skills in English at the CEFR B2 level (“Vantage”) with a focus on reading and listening comprehension as well as on oral interaction. To this end, the lessons will include reading, listening, and speaking activities while developing and consolidating General English grammar and vocabulary competences. At the same time, the course will provide students with reading and listening skills, and basic specialized vocabulary (ESP) in the field of Psychology (English for Psychology).

GENERAL ENGLISH
Grammar: the verb system: main tenses; modal verbs; the passive; reported speech; linking words
Vocabulary: health and fitness, feelings, personality, relationships, the world of work

ESP: ENGLISH FOR PSYCHOLOGY
branches of psychology; the process Vs the person approach; phobias and mental disorders; Jung, Freud, Vygotsky, Piaget; trait theory; genetics and psychology; body image and eating disorders; the Internet and psychology

NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS:
The reading list is the same for both attending and non-attending students. Non-attending students, however, are required to complete all the reading and vocabulary activities included in Jane Short’s book, English for Psychology, which is indicated as optional in the reading list for attending students. Non-attending students are invited to email Prof. Marco Canani to receive further information and advice prior to sitting for the exam.

Teaching Methods

Lectures integrated by communicative and task-centred lessons when needed. For this reason, the students’ active participation and interaction is crucial to attain the expected learning objectives. Classes will be taught using traditional and multimedia (AV) materials as well as authentic texts (reading texts about Psychology). Students are required to come to class with their coursebook and study material.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The exam includes a preliminary written test and an oral presentation. The written test consists of 30 multiple-choice questions on the grammar structures, the vocabulary, and the English for Psychology topics taught during the course. Students who pass the written test will take the oral examination on the same ‘appello’ (i.e., exam day). Students will prepare and present a short PPT (ca. 5 slides) on one of the topics related to English for Psychology. Students who demonstrate the required skills will receive a “pass” mark.

Lessons will be delivered in accordance with the guidelines provided by the University.

This course is for students enrolled in the MSc Programme in Clinical and Health Psychology whose last name begins with the letters A-L. Students whose last name begins with the letters M-Z will take the course taught by Dr. Paola Dora Giuliani.
