Objectives

During the lessons, the Student will learn how to write and communicate a geologic elaborate, and will be introduced to a peer review process.
During the field trip, different aspects of the Earth Science will be studied, giving the tools to an effective observation of geological features (i.e., sedimentology, sequence stratigraphy, volcanism, structural style...)

Contents

The class has the objective to introduce the student to different aspect of Earth Science, that can variate depending upon the locality where the field trip will be held. The aspects covered during the field trip on the Dolomites include: sedimentology, stratigraphy, structural geology, oil and gas, applied geology, history of geology, geotourism, diversity and inclusivity in the field.

Extended Syllabus

The main aspect of geology that will be studied during the Multidisciplinary field trip on the Dolomites are:
- Permo-Traissic sedimentary succession and sequence stratigraphy (Bletterbach canyon; Latemar);
- crisis of carbonate platforms (Latemar, Sciliar, Sella);
- volcanic events;
- structural styles and thrusts (Piz Boé; Puez);
- diapir tectonics and petroleum potential (San Nicolò).

Teaching Methods

The lessons will be distributed as follows:
- lessons in class: 12 hours
- field trip: 48 hours (6 days)
The Geological setting of the study area is introduced during lessons in class. The class is divided in groups that will work on different topics. The different topics will be illustrated and discussed during 1 or 2 final lessons, before the field trip.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The learning will be verified through a team work that consists in a written relation and an oral presentation.
The oral exam will be held immediately during the field trip. If the Student is not able to attend the field trip because of medical reasons or pandemics, they will have to write and discuss a short individual report.

Contacts/More Information

Attending frontal lessons is a prerequisite to participate to the field trip. During the field trip, the use of Safety gear is compulsory.
