Both didactic modules contribute to the achievement of the
the Degree course's main learning objectives, with particular emphasis on the following abilities:
Skills and understanding
Knowledge of the general features of the history of cinema and music in the twentieth century.
Knowledge of the main figures and genres, as well as of the contexts and functions of music in audiovisual texts.
Knowledge of the basic theoretical notions for a comprehension of cinematic texts.
Knowledge of the fundamentals of musical dramaturgy, with particular reference to the cinematic narration.
Knowledge of essential aspects and notions of music between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (Wagnerism, symphonism, atonality, neoclassicism, minimalism), as well as of film music from the Lumière to today's cinema (silent and sound cinema, illustration and asynchronism, montage and counterpoint, etc.).
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
Students will have to acquire the ability to orient themselves in the historical development of film music. They will also have to develop the skills for a multidisciplinary approach, i.e. they will have to be able to contextualize the development of the musical component, comparing it with the history of cinema, with the development of film aesthetics and with the other arts, in particular painting, theater, and literature.
Independence of judgment
At the end of the course, students will have to acquire the critical sense of music in audiovisual texts, thanks to the knowledge of film-music history, the comprehension of audiovisual texts, and the confrontation with significant works of the history of cinema.
Communication skills
Students will have to be able to explain the course contents and the key-notions with proper terms and clearly, showing the ability to make connections between key notions and interdisciplinary issues. Students will also need to be able to report in an adequate way the listening and viewing experiences made both in class and in individual study.
