Objectives

The course aims to provide a basic preparation regarding the theoretical knowledge, methodologies and operational tools necessary for the sustainable design of architecture, both to the building scale as to urban scale.
It also intends to provide the ability to read and enhancement of the territorial (climatic and material resources), typological and technological factors that contribute to the building configuration and its operation in a view of environmental sustainability during its useful life.

Contents

The course aims to address the issue of sustainable architectural design, with particular attention to the design implications associated with the adoption of a holistic approach, in which the building no longer represents an object in its own right, totally disconnected from its context settlement, but an integral part of a dynamic and interactive system in which environmental resources (raw materials, water, wind, sun, soil) represent the fundamental materials of architecture. An environmentally sustainable architecture, which adopts the limit principle, intended as the saving of non-renewable resources (physical and energy) and minimum pollution production (emissions and waste) at all stages of its life cycle.

Extended Syllabus

The course explores the aspects related to:
Sustainable design: historical background, principles and methods; archetypes of organic, bioclimatic and bio-ecological architecture.
Environmental optimization of living spaces
distribution, dimensional and orientation criteria of the environments according to the local climatic characteristics, the usability and the welfare of the occupants.
Bioclimatic approach: study of the microclimatic characteristics of the site, location and orientation criteria of the buildings and morphological configuration of technical elements in relation to reduce energy consumptions and to optimizing the use of renewable energy sources;
Environmental assessment of building life cycle: analysis of energetical and environmental impacts related to the materials choice, and to the construction systems adopted, with reference to the whole life cycle of buildings (design, production, construction, use and management, maintenance, disposal).

Teaching Methods

The course is organized into two teaching modules:
A first theoretical teaching module based on ex cathedra lessons and any in-depth seminars
A second application module of the knowledge illustrated in the first module based on carrying out an exercise aimed at establishing and verifying the knowledge acquired by the student

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The final evaluation will be based on:
- the presence during the theoretical lessons, seminars and exercising activities;
- the theoretical knowledge acquired during the cycle of lessons, verified through an oral test;
- the ability to apply this knowledges to the theme of the year, verified through the exercising activities.
