Basic knowledge of attachment theory and socio-emotional development.

Objectives

The course aims to offer expert knowledge of children socio-emotional development and to give knowledge and practical competences on the understanding of the quality of interactive and socio-emotional development of infants.
The student will be able to reflect on the described theories’ aspects and on relative practice applications on research and clinical work with parents and children.
The student will be able to administer, code instruments aimed to evaluate attachment and to write an essay.

Contents

Infant interactive and emotion regulation development. The parent-infant relationship in the first years of life, micro and macro analytic aspects of the interaction and its role in child socio-emotional development. Tolls for the observation and the evaluation of the parent-infant interaction.
The attachment theory and the evaluation of attachment in children and adults. How to support parenting.

Extended Syllabus

Infant interactive development from birth to the end of the first year of life.
Emotion regulation development.
The parent-infant interaction, the role of representations and behaviors.
Maternal Constellation and the intervention with the dyad from Daniel Stern perspective.
The micro and macro analyses of parent-infant interaction.
The attachment theory.
The role of parent-infant interaction for the development of attachment.
The evaluation of attachment in childhood and adulthood.
Attachment in adult age and the transmission of attachment.
Main clinical intervention programs to support parenting.
Questionnaires and interviews to evaluate attachment.

Methods of Provision

Conventional

Teaching Methods

The course is structured in 60 hours of theory and practical work. Student’s active participation to classes is required. Supplemental material to use in class and at home will be provided. Attending students will be required to write short essays, give presentations and read scientific articles. Videos, presentations and scientific article will be used a didactic material.
Attendance is not compulsory, but highly recommended.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The exam consists in two parts: an oral exam with open questions on the whole program and a written essay. The oral exam has the aim to verify the knowledge of the main thematic related to the course. The written essay is realized at home and consists of the administration, coding and comment of the tools described during the practical part of the course. The final vote is composed the 80% by the oral exam and the 20% by the written essay.
