Objectives

EDUCATIONAL TARGETS
The course aims to provide students with basic knowledge about the origins and historical developments of the technological and scientific revolution that has represented the greatest modern factor of economic and social growth and sustainable development and that has produced what is termed the "knowledge economy".
In the positive sense, we study the production of economic value through knowledge, considering the cognitive structures and the virtual, logistic and relational integrators that implement the networks of knowledge production and propagation in the contemporary economy. Part of the course will focus on the role of human capital in modern growth and development dynamics.
The topic of sustainable economic development in the age of knowledge will also be addressed.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the course the student will purchase the tools for:
- understand the complex phenomena of the development processes of knowledge-based economies;
- critically evaluate the reasons that justify the different development policies implemented by public decision makers, also and above all in terms of sustainability.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND
UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the course students will be able to apply the acquired knowledge to analyze the problems of information and knowledge and their influence on the functioning of the economy and of the sustenability.

MAKING JUDGMENTS
The student will be able to independently collect and evaluate the information necessary for the analysis and resolution of problems related to sustainable economic development in the age of knowledge. The actual possession of independent judgment is verified through the verification test in which he will have to demonstrate the ability to synthesize, analyze, elaborate and language appropriateness.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Students will be able to present the knowledge acquired with adequate language and methodological rigor.

LEARNING SKILLS
The student will be able to understand the role of knowledge in models of growth and sustainable development and will have acquired a working method useful for continuous updating in his own working context of reference, also thanks to the classroom discussion of case studies useful for applying what I learned from the theoretical point of view.

Contents

The course is divided into four parts. In the first, starting from the framework of the discipline, we study its historical evolution in the normative and thinking aspects, as well as in empirical and actual experiments. In the second, the theoretical models of production activities are combined with the codification of knowledge both public and private. The third part explores the role of innovation as a strategic force in the knowledge economy era.
Finally, in the fourth part, starting from the economic literature on the limits of development, in-depth studies will be proposed to give an answer to why in the age of knowledge we continue to witness "growth without development". Therefore, we will deal with the instruments of economic policy through which to build a sustainable knowledge society.

In the positive sense, we study the production of economic value through knowledge, considering the cognitive structures and the virtual, logistic and relational integrators that implement the networks of knowledge production and propagation in the contemporary economy. Part of the course will focus on the role of human capital in modern growth and development dynamics.
The course is divided into four parts. The third and final part explores the role of innovation as a strategic force in the knowledge economy era.

Lectures and exercises also with the use of Power Point slides, which are then made available to students, who can download them in pdf format from the teaching page.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Verification of learning is carried out with a written exam with a mark expressed out of thirty.
The test aims to ascertain the level of knowledge of the topics indicated in the program and to verify that the student has acquired knowledge of the discipline, ability to interpret economic data and ability to show clear and reasoned. The written test consists of 3 open-ended questions on the topics covered in class, each of which is assigned a maximum grade of 10/30. The evaluation takes place by adding the scores accrued for the answers given to the three questions. The answer to each question involves the attribution of a score from 0 to 10, depending on whether the answer demonstrates an insufficient level of preparation (from 0 to 2 points), sufficient (from 3 to 4 points), good (from 5 to 6 points), very good (7 to 8 points), excellent (9 to 10 points). Honors are awarded if a score of 10 is awarded for each open-ended question. Failure to achieve the minimum score of 18/30 leads to failure to pass the exam.
Two partial written tests are scheduled during the semester of the lessons. Each test consists of 3 open-ended questions on the topics covered in class up to the date of the partial, each of which is assigned a maximum grade of 10/30 according to the methods specified above. To pass the exam it is necessary to pass both partials with a minimum grade of 18/30 each. The overall final grade is given by the arithmetic average of the votes of the two partial. Praise is recognized only if one already has praise in at least one of the two partial and 30 in the other.
