•The course attendance is a compulsory prerequisite. Possession of language certifications DO NOT exempt students from the exam.

Objectives

-Students will aim to be able to understand texts in the relevant scientific field showing argumentative, expository and interlocutive skills in a lexically correct English. They should, therefore, be able to interact with acquired communicative fluency and spontaneity with native speakers, as well as to read an articulate text on topics of medical-nursing-scientific interest. It will also be proposed to revise basic English grammar and to increase hospital-setting vocabulary.

Contents

The teaching of Scientific English for the first year of the Bachelor’s Degree in NURSING (QUALIFYING FOR THE HEALTHCARE PROFESSION OF NURSING) focuses on the development of language skills, with particular attention to listening and reading comprehension and to oral production, in line with the A2/B1 descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). To this end, listening and reading activities, oral interaction and exercises aimed to develop and consolidate general grammatical and lexical competences (General English) will be proposed. At the same time, the teaching will provide students with basic specialised skills (ESP - English for Special Purposes) related to some of the main areas of nursing (Nursing English), also through oral and written comprehension activities. A large part of the course will be devoted to the linguistic study of nursing situations and of the hospital system as specialised textual genres.

SCIENTIFIC ENGLISH - ENGLISH FOR SPECIAL PURPOSES (ESP) -
PART 1
- Generally speaking, nursing language is a formal language based on semantic rules that differ from ordinary natural language (General English) in terms of vocabulary, morphology, syntax and semantics as well as other linguistic features. Writing and drafting in the scientific field implies not only knowledge of a special vocabulary but also competence in its use (linguistic collocations) in the medical/nursing context. Students will acquire linguistic elements of the nursing profession (e.g. emergency department terminology, communication with patients and colleagues, etc.) and of its many fields’ special terminologies, as generally listed below:
- Nursing English —>
- English on the various wards
- Hospital forms: meaning, relevance and filling
- Acronyms and abbreviations

- Medical English —>
- Parts of the body
- Nursing-Medical Hospital Vocabulary

ENGLISH GRAMMAR - BASIC ENGLISH -
PART 2
- The grammar module provides students with a general review of the grammar and writing skills needed to be comfortable in academic and professional life. Learning how to use correctly the English grammar will help students feel comfortable in improving everyday, work-related interlocution. Some of the covered topics are listed below:
- Verb tenses / use
- Main irregular verbs
- Adverbs
- Modal verbs
- Definite and indefinite articles
- Prepositions
- Sentence constructions
- Question constructions

Teaching Methods

•In-class lectures supplemented by communicative and task-based activities that require the constant participation and interaction of the learners in order to develop the expected language skills. The use of teaching materials through computer and multimedia (AV) supports and of reference texts, such as specialised readings, is expected. Students will be required to bring their own teaching materials to class.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

•Type of exam: WRITTEN
•Assessment Method (grading system): the examination will be considered successfully passed if the student achieves a minimum mark of 18/30, the equivalent of 18 correct answers out of 30, in the closed-ended question format
•Evaluation: through single final QUALIFYING EXAMINATION
