Prerequisites:

Knowledge of Greek and Latin is not required in order to attend the course and sit the exam. The texts of the ancient authors will be read in Italian translation.

Objectives

Knowledge and ability to understand
Know the fundamental aspects of ancient Greek culture.
Know themes, motifs and characteristics of the Greek poetesses’ literary production.
Know the condition of women in ancient Greece.
Independence of Judgement
Know how to interpret, in a historical-cultural key, the phenomena of persistence, recovery and reworking of the classical legacy in the literature, tought and arts of the modern and contemporary age.

Communications Skills
Use of the technical language specific to the discipline.

Contents

The course aims to illustrate the essential lines of development of Greek culture and literature, and to trace certain avenues of their reception in the literary and artistic tradition down to the modern and contemporary age, through the reading and analysis of literary texts that describe the condition of women in ancient Greece.

Extended Syllabus

Part I
- Knowledge of the following literary genres and authors is required, together with their historical reference context: epic (Homer and the Homeric question; Hesiod, Works and Days), iambus and archaic elegy (Archilochus, Semonides, Mimnermus, Phocylides), monodic (Sappho, Alcaeus, Anacreon) and choral lyric (Alcman, Simonides, Pindar, Corinna), historiography of the classical age (Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon), tragedy (Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides), comedy (Aristophanes, Menander), philosophy (Sophists, Plato, Aristotle), oratory (Lysias, Demosthenes), Hellenistic poetry (Callimachus, Apollonius of Rhodes, Theocritus), the Hellenistic epigram (Anyte and Nossis), Plutarch, the novel of the imperial age and Lucian.

Part II
The condition of women in ancient Greece
Reading (in Italian translation) of the following ancient texts:
- Homer, Iliad, book XIV, vv. 153-360 (recommended translation: G. Cerri, Omero. Iliade, Rizzoli, Milano 1996).
- Homer, Odyssey, book VI (recommended translations: M.G. Ciani, Omero. Odissea, Marsilio, Venezia 1994 or Omero. Odissea. Books V-VII, ed. J. B. Hainsworth, trans. by G.A. Privitera, A. Mondadori, Milano. various reprints).
- B. Gentili - C. Catenacci (eds.), I poeti del canone lirico nella Grecia antica, Feltrinelli, Milano 2010 (fragments to study will be indicated in the course of the lessons).
