Prerequisites:

A medium preparation at secondary school level in mathematics is requires, as well as basic notions acquired in the Module of Applied Physics.

Objectives

At the end of this course the student should have become familiar with the basic notions of electromagnetism, with the laws of physics regulating the behavior and evolution of macroscopic systems, with the classical physics method, based on dialectics between theory and experiment.
Moreover, the student should have acquired the ability to solve simple problems in electromagnetism, i.e. calculating physical quantities related to a system or predicting the evolution of a system.
Finally, the student should have acquired the ability to develop the ability to elaborate and use what has been acquired in the course in the context of different applicative disciplines

Current. Ohm’s laws. Direct current circuits. Batteries and energy.
MAGNETOSTATICS
Magnetic field. Biot Savart law, Ampère's circuital law. Magnetic field of a current, magnetic field of a solenoid. Lorentz force, motion of a charge in a uniform magnetic field, Laplace force, magnetic dipole.

ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION
Magnetic flux. Faraday-Neumann-Lenz law.
ELECTROMAGNTIC WAVES
Maxwell’s equation. Electromagnetic waves.

Teaching Methods

The course is structured in 8 hours of frontal teaching, divided into 2 hours lessons according to the academic calendar. The frontal teaching consists of theoretical lessons and examples of practical applications.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The student preparation will be verified with a written test and an oral exam.

The written test lasts 2 hours and consists of 3 exercises (2 problems of the Applied Physics module and 1 of Electromagnetism). It aims to verify the ability to solve simple problems in classical physics.
The written and oral parts will be carried out on different days, to allow the teacher to evaluate the written test with a score between 0 and 30 (20 for Applied Physics and 10 for Electromagnetism). It is possible to take the oral part having obtained at least 15 points to the written one.
The oral exam aims to verify the knowledge and understanding of arguments covered during the course and present in the programs.
The oral part can add up to 6 points to the written one.
