Prerequisites:

For a perfect comprehension of the topics of the course a strong basis of General Chemistry is needed. Therefore, students are warmly encouraged to take that exam before starting the course.
The exam can be taken after passing the Analitical Chemistry exam.

Objectives

At the end of the course the student shall reach the following objectives:
- Comprehension of chemical equilibria mechanism and management of multiple equilibria in water solution.
- Knowledge of chemical behaviour of main cations and anions.
- Ability to setup a separation and identification protocol of simple mix of inorganic compounds.
- Knowledge of the pharmaceutical, pharmacological and toxicological role of most important cations and anions.
- Learning of principal lab operations, through practical lab experiences.
- Knowledge of most important safety rules in the lab practice.

Extended Syllabus

General aspects of the laboratory procedures
Laboratory equipments and basic safety regulation. Lab procedures. Semimicro analysis techniques: evaporation and boiling, calcination, melting, filtration, centrifugation, washing of precipitates, analytical reagents.

Qualitative analysis and the periodic system of the elements
The periodic table. Properties and characteristics of the inorganic compounds: chemical bonds and color. Solutions.

Chemical equilibria in water solution
Acid-base, solubility, redox and coordination equilibria.

Systematic analysis of cations
Preliminary assays. Flame test.
Analysis of cations of I, II, III, IV, V e VI analytic group.

Analysis and identification of anions
Analysis of anions: carbonate, oxalate, sulfate, iodide, bromide, chloride, phosphate, nitrate, acetate, tartrate, borate.

Cations and anions of pharmaceutical and toxicological interest
Identification assays and limit test of cation and anion species, described in the Farmacopea Ufficiale Italiana (F.U. XII Ed.).
Biochemical, pharmaceutical and toxicological aspects of the inorganic substances.

Teaching Methods

The course is organized in 56 hours of taught-class and 36 hours of lab practice. During the lectures the theoretical aspects of the analysis of pharmaceutically relevant inorganic compounds will be discussed.
The lab practice, single seat, are organized so that the student can deal with lab practice and carry out the analysis explained in the taught-class.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The final exam consists of an oral examination lasting 30-40 minutes, aimed to verify the comprehension of general concepts of the analysis in water solution, also through the resolution of exercises. Gaps in the basic knowledge of General Chemistry concepts will not be tolerated. The exam will be completed by verifying the knowledge of the pharmaceutical and toxicological role of inorganic compounds and instrumental techniques of analysis. The result of the lab tests will contribute to the final evaluation.
