Objectives

The objectives here described are strictly related to the philosophical and theoretical approach of the disciplinary field which characterises the course.
The course aims to develop a critical work that analyses the reasons (which are important at philosophical level) of the problematic phenomenon of the human relationship in the cultural environment both of Europe (in a specific meaning) and of the Western world (in a wide sense). The course deals with the matter of the attribution of this state of crisis to the relation between people and countries. This complex study involves an active interconnection between different knowledge areas. In accordance with this point philosophy, culture and pedagogy will be used as essential tools of the analysis.
Furthermore, the course seeks to point out all the contributions, obtained from the readings, that could be useful to the reconsideration of the educational phenomenon. The re-elaboration of the educational strategies should take into account the international environment and also the challenges resulting from the current state of western civilization. The students will be able to draw the central issues of the educational phenomenon. Moreover, they will improve the knowledge in this area in order to identify the necessary skills to plan an educational intervention which is possible to actualize in a real context. In this way, the measures shall take into consideration the “risk” of the open-mindedness as a coessential element of the human relationship phenomenon in today’s context.
In line with the professional profiles and career opportunities, the students will master the skills related to their particular field in order to increase the argumentative abilities that are necessary for the problem solving as part of their future tasks.

Contents

Course Title: “Europe: Identity, meaning and duty. The human relationship in the context of the European conscience's crisis”.

Extended Syllabus

At first, the course provides a general framework of the topic of human relationship in the current historical and social context of Europe. The comparisons between different historical contexts of Europe (R. Brague) is necessary to underline the fundamental questions of thought that are the most important to face the current challenge. In this regard, the argumentations of Guardini and V. Havel will be analysed and will be used as a source of inspiration to re-think the identity, the meaning and the task of Europe in the difficult scenario of European culture in the third millennium.

Teaching Methods

It will essentially be based on the lectures. The course will set as a seminar with a view to generating a critical dialogue in class

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

1) The learning assessment consists of an oral test. The exam is structured as a dialectic dialogue and it aims to check: the knowledge of the students about questions of the course, their comprehension and their personal reworking of the books, their ability to argue the contents during the term.
2) The grades are given on the basis of 30 points. The oral test and the argumentative skills, without any written verification, will demonstrate the achievement of learning objectives provided above.

1) At the beginning of the course, the students will need to have their own books to attend and participate in the debate in class.
2) At the end of the course, the students will have the free option to take part in a seminar as an opportunity to review and further study. The organizational and logistical issues will deal with the students during the lectures period.
3) The students are invited to come for any type of clarification in the office of the professor (the room is located at the second floor of “Polo Istituti” building) during the office hours (from 9 am to 11 am on Tuesdays).
