Prerequisites:

The Architectural Design module does not foresee pre-requisites while the HVAC module has a good basic knowledge of the Technical Physics program, in particular of the heat transmission and the thermo-hygrometric behavior of the multilayer flat walls.

Objectives

The first training objective is to raise the awareness of the future designer on the importance of the construction activity, which is essential to face with the right motivation and conviction the design experience aimed at building a house located in a highly characterized natural context and close to the sea to develop technical construction and energy efficiency solutions with zero impact, for example using traditional materials (e.g. wood and stone) or plant solutions with low energy and environmental impact. In this perspective, through the module of Technical Systems for the building, the aim is to provide students with knowledge regarding the operating principles of the main components of the technical systems, favoring the most efficient and least impacting solutions with the students have significant competence in the interaction between plant system and building to train professionals able to design the integrated building-plant system.

Contents

The integrated course consists of two modules: Architectural design, held by prof. Prati and Technical Plants for Building, held by prof. Zazzini.
The project developed during the course involves the design at various scales of representation of an isolated single-family house strongly characterized by the relationship with the Mediterranean context. In the first phase, the aspects of the theme of living as an archetypal and primordial act are emphasized, while the second phase is dedicated to the representation of the project through architectural design understood in its various analogic and digital forms.
The design process is always accompanied by the theoretical study of the architectural aspects. At the same time, in the module dedicated to technical systems, the aim is to provide students with fundamental knowledge regarding heating and air conditioning systems, about their components, the functions performed, the energy and environmental effects, with particular regard to the integration of the HVAC system with structural and architectural ones.

Teaching Methods

The Integrated Building Design Course develops during the first semester of the current Academic Year with the Architectural Design module which in the second semester is flanked by that of Technical Plants, in which the efficiency techniques are deepened. passive energies that have been prepared during the Design Course. The teachers hold theoretical lectures, integrated by laboratory activities for the development of a themed project in the Architectural Design module, and by calculation exercises regarding plant elements in the Technical Systems for Building module. There are also, where possible, guided visits to plant-based installations of particular interest, such as those of spas or waste treatment plants.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Learning is verified through integrated tests of the two modules. During the course, periodic reviews are carried out of the design drawings developed by the students, and, in the end, they take two integrated oral tests, the first of which focuses on the themes of architectural design and the second on HVAC aspects. In both tests, the teachers aim to verify the students' abilities to connect the knowledge acquired during the course in a profitable and transversal way and to develop their own and original solutions to the problems encountered. The approval is awarded a single vote expressed in 30/30 that takes into account the whole integrated verification process.
