Prerequisites:

Building science elements. Knowledge of materials, construction systems, standards, codes. Knowledge of the basics of rehabilitation and restoration. Notions of urban planning.

Objectives

The student of the course is required to acquire the knowledge of the problems related to the technological culture of the project, and the ability to transfer this knowledge into a design experimentation in the field of rehabilitation of existing buildings.

Contents

The 6 CFU module of Building Rehabilitation Technologies is located in the second year of the specialist degree course in Construction Engineering (Class LM24).
The course intends to provide students with an adequate level of training on how to deal with the problem of project intervention in the existing building heritage, both in the older building and in the more recent one.

Extended Syllabus

The course of Technologies of building rehabilitation explores, within the project, the relationship between conservation / transformation. Through the evaluation of the performance (functional, environmental, technological) of the existing building structures, and through the identification of the conditions of constraint and degrees of freedom, the possibilities of adaptation and transformation are defined, up to the designing of new projects assets that better respond to changes in the requirement framework.
The problem of the rehabilitation project is addressed in the course, in relation and collaboration with the disciplinary sectors of restoration and composition, both at a theoretical level, through the definition of the role of the rehabilitation and the building and urban maintenance, and their mutual relations to the interior of architectural culture, in history and contemporaneity, both at the application level, through a design exercise and the deepening of the necessary operational instruments

Teaching Methods

Teaching is organized by alternating ex-cathedra lessons and application seminars with other professors and operators in the sector, as well as field visits (construction sites and companies).

Verification of learning:

The maturity and the ability to solve a building rehabilitation theme will be evaluated, with an in-depth study of the related problems and theoretical-practical knowledge.
