Objectives

The main objective of this course is to provide students with the basic principles of earthquake engineering design, focusing on the design of new reinforced concrete buildings. The main techniques of seismic design and analysis are presented referring to recent code developments worldwide, more specifically with respect to the Italian Building Code (Norme Tecniche per le Costruzioni 2108). During the course, students will work on assignments on topics covered presented in class. Assignments will include both hand calculations and the use of commercial software for seismic analysis of structures. In the second half of the course students will be asked to design parts of a code-conforming reinforced concrete building.

Contents

Starting from the principles of structural design that students acquired in the first level degree and from those taught in the Module 1 of this class (Dynamics of Structures) this second module focuses on the principles of earthquake engineering design following the Italian Building Code (Norme Tecniche delle Costruzioni 2018) and Eurocode 8. More specifically, the following topics will be presented: seismic hazard in Italy, linear methods of analysis (with emphasis on the response spectrum analysis method), principles of capacity design and their implications in the design of earthquake resistant reinforced concrete buildings. The concepts presented and discussed in class will be used for the design of a reinforced concrete building, that can be a frame, a wall or a base-isolated structure.

Design of reinforced concrete frame building. Load analysis, slab design, beam design, column design, shallow foundation design. The seismic resistant system may be a frame, a wall system, or a base-isolated structure. A design report is required, together with drawings indicated fixed points indications, reinforcement details for a beam, a column and a shallow foundation beam.

The project must be completed and graded before the beginiing of the new academic year 2021/22.

Teaching Methods

The course includes both in class teaching and assignments on both seismic analysis and design applications, mostly focusing on member design. In the second half of the course, office hours will be used to monitor progress on the assigned project.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Two written midterm tests will be administered halfway and toward the end of the semester. Students who do not pass both tests will have to take a comprehensive written exam. Examples of past exams are posted on the elearning platform.
Weekly meetings will be held to assist students with the design project.
The final grade for Integrated Course will be the average of the grade students received in the two modules (Dynamics of Structures – semester 1, and Earthquake Engineering Design – semester 2). Grading of the Earthquake Engineering Design module is: 25% for each midterm (or 50% for the comprehensive written exam) and 50% for the design project.
