The course provides an introduction to the European cultural context between the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries with the rise of Modernism. After introducing the work of the so-called War Poets, the course follows a chronological perspective. The writings of E. M. Forster and T.S. Eliot will provide an introduction to the modernist innovations in porte and prose. Finally, the course examines John Fowles's novel to introduce students to postmodernism and the critical debate on re-writings and the parodic representation of the past
