The teaching includes two cycles of ex-cathedra lessons, an interpretative study exercise of a chosen Urban Regeneration project (selected in Italy or abroad) and finally, the development of the project of a public architectural complex, dedicated to the theme "House of Adolescence" to be carried out in groups of maximum two students. The project includes two locations in Pescara, in the area of the ex-factory FEA and in the area of the ex-slaughterhouse. The goal is to develop a complex Urban Regeneration project in an abandoned area of the city. The theme of the "House of Adolescence" has matured from a strong awareness of the problems of adolescence (referable to the age between 11-19 years, extendable to 25), carried out by the National Observatory for Infancy and Adolescence linked to the COVID 19 Emergency. A theme of extraordinary importance for the harmonious development of the young population that has already been the subject of design abroad to create complex buildings dedicated to listening, dialogue, socialization, initiation of work, integration of the adolescent population with the city. Particularly in France, there are numerous "Masoin de l’Adolescentes" projects in the most important cities, including cultural spaces, meeting places and even temporary residences. As regards the two areas of intervention proposed, the individual student can choose the location he prefers.
The ex cathedra lectures will tend to deepen the theme of urban space regeneration and the Social Public Building in the contemporary research - interpreted, both in its methodological implications, and as a central moment of current architectural experimentation.
The cycle of lectures will deepen the design theme of the course through the analysis of significant projects, which are taken up as case studies to be studied in depth during the exercises.
The project envisages both the redevelopment of existing buildings and their expansion, including the arrangement of the relevant public space. In addition, the functional program of the building provides for the inclusion of a quota of temporary housing.
Within this context, the architectural project will be aimed at experimenting with new types of public buildings, with a strong focus on the social issue of fragility in adolescence and the sustainability of architecture. The design will be aimed at prefiguring a new 'life cycle' for the neighborhood, both by working on inserting the new one and by working on the existing one. In particular, we will focus on the role of open spaces within the neighborhood and its urban reconnections. The theme of the renaturalization of public spaces, of 'green' architecture and urban gardens becomes a fundamental reference for the architectural project. Particular attention must be paid to the design of spaces sensitive to the accessibility, which may also strongly influence the architectural design.

The lectures are intended to stimulate students to reflect on the design process, whose tools and methodologies are explored. The goal is to make students acquire a greater awareness of the design process and the thought that underlies it, compared to the increasingly widespread dominance of images; with this in mind, the lectures deepen, in a monographic sense, a series of interpretative concepts and design methodologies on the theme , such as to outline a history of architectural thought starting from the 'modern' up to the experimentation of contemporary research. For this purpose, the exercise of critical reading of projects and achievements will take on particular importance, in the belief that knowing how to read a project means precisely identifying the themes that run through it, and therefore understanding the underlying thought.

The Design phases of the course will be divided into:
Phase 01 – Design Interpretation of the Contexte
Phase 02 – Concept of the urban and architectural project
Development of the urban / architectural project: definition of the functional program, settlement strategies, elaboration of design themes and architectural prefigurations. Development of the functional diagram. Development of the study model.
Phase 03 - shape and structure - shape and enclosure.
Architectural invention and structural conception, relationships between the supporting structure and the building envelope, technical feasibility, choice and experimentation on materials, the use of renewable energy.
Phase 04-Development of the architectural project – Public Building
Project development on the architectural scale. Materials, structure and eco-sustainability. Final model.
Phase 05-Final exam - two boards in horizontal A1 format, final model; delivery of the cd with the works; power point presentation.
The course aims to contain as much as possible the printing of documents and avoid large plans, both to reduce costs and forms of waste of resources. Intermediate deliveries will be made electronically or on A3 and A2 formats with reduced-scale drawings. There will be three evaluation phases, the first relating to the initial workshop on urban space, the second on the interpretation of the chosen project, the third on the definition of the project concept.
The final exam includes 2 plans in A1 format, presentation power point and model in the appropriate scale.
The final exam grade is made up from the individual assessments of the work phases, the work methodology and the correspondance of the design process with the initial objectives.
The final evaluation is espresse in thirtieths.
To facilitate the carrying out of the initial phase, of information on research in the field of housing, a teaching handout is provided which brings together a selection of significant projects by design themes, with related drawings and bibliography. The lessons will be available to students and will constitute, together with the handout, the basis for starting the choice of a case study to study and interpret. The exercise in reading and interpreting a project chosen from some masters of the 'modern' and 'contemporary' period will be the preparatory phase for the subsequent design exercise phase on the theme of a collective dwelling building.
The design activity will be carried out by groups of 2 students. Normally each day of the course is started by a lecture by the professor who defines the topics, tools and methodologies to be used. This is followed by the assistance and revision work in the seminars carried out by the professor with the tutors and carried out individually for each group of students. At the end of each day, the work to be done at home and the program for the next week will be clear.The Course makes use of the Teams online platform dedicated to teaching which contains a series of services and contents, such as the bulletin board (for communication with students), the program, the calendar of activities. From the site it is possible to download all the ex cathedra lectures and handouts that contain the selected collection of examples related to the theme of the year's project.
Attendance at the Architectural Design 3 is compulsory and is ascertained through the presence of the students who are taken regularly during the year. At the beginning of the academic year, the complete program, the complete schedule of the educational activities i salso published. The schedule shows the dates and times in wich the individual teaching activities will be carried out, the intermediate evaluation testes and the final exam.
