Alessandro Manzoni: the path towards modernity
Alessandro Manzoni’s work has been approached by critics from new perspectives in the last twenty years, and it has proven itself to be central both to the Italian and the European literary history. The relevance of Manzoni’s thought about language, communication, politics, anthropology, religion as well as about literature and art in general, is now definitively acquired: Promessi Sposi is a novel in which the reflection on evil and the manipulation of truth through the word lead the reader to confront himself with universal and unavoidable problems for the analysis of reality and human relations. The course will be mainly focused on Manzoni’s relationship with Classicism and Romanticism, on the question of language, on the importance of theater in the author’s formation, on the choice and peculiarities of the “historical novel” genre.
