COURSE SYLLABUS

- Periodization of the Russian literature of the first half of the 19th century.
- Works of Ivan Turgenev. Analyzing the novels “Otcy i det”i and “Nov’”: Turgenev’s ideas, language and style.
- Works of Fjodor Doestoevsky. Analyzing the novels “Prestuplenie i nakazanie” and “Besy”: Dostoevsky’s ideas, language and style.
- Works of Lev Tolstoj. Analyzing the novel “Vojna i mir”:Tolstoy’s ideas, language and style.
- In-depth (slow) reading and discussions will be guided by the questions concerning the stylistic peculiarities of the novel, and its development in changing historical and cultural contexts.
- Literary criticism on Turgenev, Dostoevsky and Tolstoy in the 20th century: 1.M.M.Bachtin 2. V.B. Shklovsky.
