The knowledge of Structural Engineering, Geotechnics and Dynamics of Structures are considered fundamental as those aspects are presented in previous Courses of the same Master Degree.

Objectives

The purpose of this Masonry Construction Course is aimed primarily at the consolidation of existing and/or historical building structures, is to provide the basis of structural design for static consolidation, seismic improvement and/or geotechnical consolidation of existing structures , with particular reference to masonry structures.
The masonry structures are, in our country, the most widespread and constitutive structural typology of the building fabric of most of the towns and historical centers of the cities.
The main objective of the course is to put the student in a position to proceed with the Design and Control, in compliance with actual Code, the basic elements for securing a masonry building. In this case, considering the great heritage of Masonry Structures in Italy (particularly in earthquake prone zones), a coherent and correct analysis of building practice has a fundamental role.

Contents

The main goal of the Course, devoted to Engineering Students of the 2nd year of Master Degree in Construction Engineering, is that to permit to be able to design and model traditional structures: in particular masonry structures. This goal will be reached by means of frontal lections, both theoretical and practical ones, and of an optional complete design of a in situ test campaign on an existing masonry structures.
Particularly an engineering approach to seismic effects on structures will be carried out considering earthquake input on structures, site effect of earthquake motion and design approach on masonry structures.
This argument will be the topic of a specific Course in the 1st year of Master Degree in Construction Engineering.

Extended Syllabus

In order to point out, the program of Masonry Constructions Course will follow the following schedule for the general arguments:

- Actual Code provisions and evolution
- Material Modeling
- Geometry Modeling
- Action Modeling
- Non seismic load and condition Analysis
- Global Seismic analysis and modeling
- Seismic analysis for local and global mechanisms
- Repairing analysis of a masonry building
The first part introduces, according to actual scientific knowledge's, to modeling and structural design problems.. Evolution of International and National Codes are taken into account in order to clarify the Seismic approach evolution.
In particular this part has the goal to present a complete treatment of seismic engineering. For these reasons we will consider risk analysis, performance level and damage diffusion in the structures.
The second part is devoted to masonry geometry modeling problems (in this case the frame model typical for r.c. structures is not generally able to represent structural behavior) and load definition; both existing and new structures will be considered.
The third part treats linear non linear structural analysis for masonry building; both global and local behavior is considered. Again both seismic and non seismic actions are considered.
Aiming to carry out the structural evaluation of an existing building and in order to le to be able to correctly manage a repair design for a masonry structure, a procedure for building quality definition and experimental investigations planning will be simulated as complementary activity.
In this case, according to Code provisions, a relevant attention will be paid on flat jacks technique, for the definition of both stress state and elastic parameters of a masonry portion in a masonry structure.
Finally general experimental test procedures, material strength criteria, failure mechanisms and different analysis models will be considered too.

Teaching Methods

The teaching activity includes a theoretical part (with lectures and exercises performed by the teacher in the classroom) and one of an applicative nature (with the assignment of simple design themes that will be developed by the student with the supervision of the teacher, according to weekly review cycles).
The Teacher will be at disposal for weekly consulting hours and design revisions; an dedicated scheduling will be defined for special events.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The final exam consists in the discussion of the individual works related to the assigned exercises and in an oral or written test, theoretical, on the topics developed during the Course.
The results of any intermediate test will also be considered in the final evaluation, according to the original proposal of each Student.

Contacts/More Information

During the Course period, in parallel with lessons and optionally by each Student, the design analysis (in terms of both in-situ tests campaign and repairing hypothesis) of an existing building in masonry will be developed.
In this case it will be also important to make reference to the current Price List for the interventions on masonry buildings in order to improve actual practice according to Code Provisions for Masonry heritage repairing.
Such buildings must be defined by each Student: it is considered as a fundamental goal that each Student can be able to organize a data collection phase and can be able to program a real design approach according to Code provisions.
