In order to be able to follow this Biochemistry module successfully, the following basic knowledge is essential as essential prerequisites:
Basic knowledge of inorganic and organic general chemistry.
Basics of basic algebra
Properties of the powers. Exponential function and properties of exponentials
Logarithmic function and properties of logarithms
Basic notions of classical physics. Physical quantities and S.I. Principles of thermodynamics. Thermodynamic quantities: enthalpy, free energy and entropy. Properties of ideal gases.
Cartesian reference system. Knowledge of the functions: sine, cosine, tangent.
Knowledge of functions: line, parabola, hyperbole.

Objectives

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: The Biochemistry module (1 cfu) is a prerequisite for the Clinical Biochemistry module (2 cfu) and subsequent diagnostic and therapy modules. Students will learn: 1) the main physico-chemical properties of lipids and proteins; 2) Main Radiation Interactions - biological macromolecules
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES: The student will have to demonstrate that he / she has learned the classification / structure of the biological macromolecules as well as the main effects of the radiation on them. The acquired knowledge is basic and must provide the ability to effectively follow the subsequent courses in Clinical Biochemistry, Physiology and Pathology. These basic learning must also serve to have greater critical capacity in the use of radiological diagnostic tools.

Recalls of carbon chemistry. Structure and classification of hydrocarbons. Functional groups and carbon oxidation: simple functions and complex oxygen functions. Structure and classification of biological macromolecules. Amino acids. Peptide bond. Primary structure of proteins. Secondary structure, alpha helix and beta sheet. Tertiary structure and quaternary structure. Myoglobin and Hemoglobin.
Glucidi-glycosidic bond. Ketose monosaccharides and aldose disaccharides and polysaccharides. Glycogen, starch and cellulose.
Lipids. Properties of fatty acids. Reserve lipids, structure of triacylglycerols. Membrane lipids, phospholipids and glycolipids. Cholesterol and steroid hormones.
Enzymes as biological catalysts. Arrhenius theory. Kinetic parameters, Km and Vmax. Competitive, non-competitive and acompetitive inhibitors.
Spectroscopy of macromolecules. Chromophore groups of macromolecules and light absorption. Lambert and Beer. General principles of fluorescence. Diagram of Jablonski. Intrinsic and extrinsic fluorescence. Blue-shift and red-shift. Principles of phosphorescence.
