Objectives

In a multi-cultural world, this course plays an important role in developing students’ communication, promotional, and teaching abilities, contributing to the complete achievement of the learning objectives. In fact, the use of English as a lingua franca will be the keyword for multi-language interactions and, most of all, for the acquisition of the necessary knowledge supplied by the international regulation updating.

Contents

The aim of the language course is to provide students with a thorough grounding in the study of grammar, language style, and terminology concerning the field of Occupational Medicine. Focusing on language, the students’ knowledge of English grammar and style will be strengthened according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). In detail, for what concerns grammar, the course will focus on past tenses, futures, modals, passive voice, and conditionals. An indepth look at the style of English Scientific/Academic Writing will be provided at the end of the course.
Besides grammar, real medical and scientific texts will be examined from a linguistic perspective together with their register.
To conclude, special emphasis will be given to medical terminology and style pertaining to readings and reading-comprehensions specific for health professionals and students.

Extended Syllabus

Each lesson is divided into two parts: the first one deals with grammar topics, while the second with the study of medical specific terminology and texts chosen by the professor.
In detail, the course comprises the following grammar topics:
• Past tenses
• Futures
• Modals
• Passive Form and Academic Writing
• Conditionals (0, 1st, 2nd, 3rd)
Special attention will be devoted to the following topics concerning medicine, focusing on terminology, for enhancing students’ translation skills:
• The History of Medical English
• Medical English Grammar Structure
• Health and Illness
• Pain
• Public Health and Infectious Diseases
• Covid-19 and Work Environment; EU Regulation
As an integration of the learning materials and as an application of the grammar competencies acquired in the course, academic papers and international medical organizations’ online documents will be presented to the students for specific study of their language and translation. These annually updated materials – dealing with themes such as vaccinations, vaccine preventable diseases and travellers’ health - will be supplied by the professor in the course of the semester.

Teaching Methods

The course will last 24 hours. Interactive activities are implemented during the lessons to engage the students in exercises and readings.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The proficiency will be achieved after having passed a written test with grammar and reading-comprehension exercises, translations of terminology relating to the medical topics studied in class. After the written test, students will have to take a brief oral test, in order to assess their competencies and ability in reading and understanding scientific/academic papers.
