The course will be aimed at students who have passed the exam of Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

Objectives

The purpose of the course is to provide knowledge about the fundamental notions of the development of biotechnological drugs. At the end of the course the student must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biotechnological drugs and the production process. - have the ability to apply and explain the basic knowledge acquired during the course.. - demonstrate the ability to read and understand scientific articles on related topics.

Contents

Biotechnology introduction. Difference between synthetic and biotechnological drugs. Proteins and nucleic acid structures: overview.
DNA recombinant technology, overview of the DNA cloning process. Biotechnological production of drugs. Analysis of biological proteins. Stability of pharmaceutical compounds of biotechnological origin. Photoinstability. Chemical and physical instabilities.
Insulin, growth hormone.
Cytokine: IL1, IL2, interferon, erythropoietin.
Vaccines.
Monoclonal antibodies.
Outline of biosimilars.
