The module will introduce you to the fundamentals of syntax of the English language, such as phrase, clause and sentence, their elements, as well as the analysis of syntactic roles. It will also introduce you to the basic principles of pragmatics.
The focus will also be on Standard British and American English, RP and GenAm, as well as on different dimensions of language variation, with regard to Cockney, Estuary English. The phenomenon of English as a Lingua Franca will also be discussed in terms of its impact in a teaching context.
