Prerequisites:

Students must have passed the English Language I exam in order to sit for the English Language and Translation Exam. However, students can attend the course even if still have to take the first-year exam

Objectives

LEARNING OUTCOMES
Consistently with the learning objectives of the undergraduate programme in “Linguistic Mediation and Intercultural Communication”, the first module of the course (LANGUAGE) provides an introduction to Discourse Analysis, Global English and corpus linguistics. These concepts are now crucial to the professions of interpreter and translator, as well as to language and cultural mediators. The second module (TRANSLATION) provides strategies and methods in order to analyze and translate tourist texts (tourism, art, cultural heritage, etc.) from English into Italian and viceversa, with a focus on the styles and communication strategies that constitute them. Specific attention will be placed on determining appropriate translation strategies to foreground the communication functions typical of each textual typology as well as their lexical, terminological, pragmatic, and stylistic features

Contents

The first part of the course (LINGUISTICS MODULE) provides an introduction to Discourse Analysis, i.e., the analysis of language “beyond the sentence”. Specific focus will be placed on discourse analysis as a means to investigate language use in its social contexts, particularly in dialogic exchanges among speakers. Subsequently, the module will introduce the concept of “Global English” and examine the role played by the Media – the press, the radio, advertising, television and, more recently, the Internet – in its development. The last part of the module introduces students to corpus linguistics. The module is taught in English, and intends to foster the students’ language skills, their ability to investigate the English language and its structures, as well as their critical thinking skills

The second part (MODULE ON TRANSLATION) aims to develop the linguistic, analytical and translation tools needed to address the translation of various types of texts in the field of tourist communication. Different types of texts and different levels of difficulty will be presented to discuss the best translation strategies to apply to each individual case. The genre and the textual function will be examined, and each piece will be thoroughly analysed from a content and linguistic point of view in preparation for passive or active translation. Particular emphasis will be placed on tools, including technology, to support terminology research and stylistic analysis. Students will be also given some fundamental theoretical concepts to set the analysis of the preliminary text for translation

The course includes LANGUAGE CLASSES taught by native-speakers language instructors. Students are strongly recommended to take active part in such classes in order to reach the language competences expected by graduates in linguistic and cultural mediation. The achievement of such language skills is also crucial in order to pass the second-year Language and translation exam

Extended Syllabus

LINGUSITICS MODULE (CANANI)
a) An introduction to discourse analysis, i.e, the analysis of language “beyond the sentence”. The work of Austin, Grice, Halliday, and Leech will be examined to introduce students to the study of language use in social contexts, with a focus on dialogic exchanges between speakers. The course will examine concepts such as field, tenor and mode, speech acts, and performative verbs.
b) The development of Global English and its main features, with a focus on the role played by the media (namely the press, advertising, TV, cinema and the Internet) in determining its specificities
c) An introduction to corpus linguistics. The process of compiling and analyzing corpus data; the most important existing English corpora and their features

TRANSLATION MODULE (SARACINO)
The translation part aims to develop the linguistic, analytical and translation tools needed to address the translation of various types of texts in the field of tourist communication. Different types of texts and different levels of difficulty (eg tourist guides, brochures, websites and so forth) will be presented to students to discuss the best translation

LANGUAGE CLASSES
Language activities aiming to help students acquire / consolidate CEFR B2 skills. Students will refer to the course material selected and indicated by their language instructor

Teaching Methods

Lectures, seminars, activities, and exercises aimed at producing coherent and cohesive texts, at familiarizing with the linguistic features of English for the media, and at developing translation skills with reference to tourist texts. Language classes taught by native-speaker language instructors. Course attendance is strongly recommended

Verification of learning:

WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAM

WRITTEN EXAM
- LANGUAGE: multiple-choice questions on discourse analysis, an exercise on cohesion and coherence, an exercise of textual analysis
- TRANSLATION: translation of two tourist texts, one from Italian into English and one from English into Italian
Monolingual dictionaries are allowed for the Language exam, bilingual dictionaries are allowed for the Translation exam

ORAL EXAM
The oral exam, to be taken in English, assesses the candidates’ competences about discourse analysis, English for the media, Global English, and corpus linguistics. Candidates are expected to demonstrate critical thinking skills, to use specialized lexis, and to be able to discuss the course contents clearly and accurately

LANGUAGE CLASSES
The result of language instructors' examination will be taken into consideration to determine the final mark. Further information is available on the website of the Language Centre (CLA)

GRADES
The final mark is the average of the grades obtained in the written (2 marks, Linguistics and Translation) and the oral exams.
To sit the oral exam, candidates must pass all the sections of the written exam (min. 18/30). Should candidates receive a grade lower than 18, they can only resit the sections that they have failed. The final mark will also take into account the evaluation of the language instructors

Students will be graded as follows: 1-17 Fail, 18-21 satisfactory, 22-24 fairly good, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 cum laude excellent
