Prerequisites:

The only pre-requisite requirement is to pass the Urban Planning 2 exam. Knowledge of the urban planning discipline is required on the following topics: urban planning analysis and interpretation of the existing; Fundamental concepts of modern urban planning and design; history of modern urban planning.

Skills are also required in the following fields: freehand drawing of urban plans; computer knowledge of graphic programs (Adobe Illustrator; Autocad; Adobe Photoshop; 3D modeling); basic knowledge of English.

Objectives

The training course aims to acquire the ability to develop a complex urban project, controlling it in its physical-morphological aspects with particular attention in terms of sustainability (environmental, social and economic-administrative feasibility). From a professional point of view, the course intends to put the student in front of the simulation of a real urban project, measuring himself with the conditions of the physical, social and administrative context, inviting him to deal with the regulations in force and with the conditions of the real estate market.
The conceptual steps through which the student will be guided are the following:
Analysis of the methodological and procedural instrumentation (PRG; Sector sheet, etc.);
Analysis of the existing context and interpretation of the intervention conditions;
Development of a guiding vision (concept);
Elaboration of a Master plan;
Development of a floor plan and a volumetric plan containing the project parameters.

It will essentially be a real reality task, going through the main steps that lead a professional from the project idea to its physical implementation, simulated with the creation of a model, on which the student will evaluate the different impacts of the solution on the existing context.
The course is coordinated (urban theme) with the courses of Architectural Restoration 2, History of Architecture 3, Architectural Composition 4, Environmental Design.

Contents

The course focuses on the theme of the urban project and its practical application to a real environment, choosing it from a series of projects currently being implemented in Italian cities.
The theoretical topics covered will therefore be relevant to the issue and more generally to the role of urban planning in urban transformation processes.
The theoretical assumptions start from the consideration that a rethinking of the urban project is necessary if we assume the transformation of what we call "urban", and in consideration of the new questions addressed to architecture and urban planning, in particular those coming from cultures ecology and landscape. We will then address topics such as:
the urban project in the European experience (from the French urban project to the IBA experience in Berlin);
conditions of utility and legitimacy of the urban project, its strategic role in the transformation processes;
the demographic process of urbanization of the planet and the role of cities in the great ecological transformations;
the new models of urban development that lay at the basis of the processes of co-evolution between nature and artifice;
the contamination of urban planning with the disciplines of Urban Ecology and Landscape Architecture as an enrichment opportunity for the culture of urban design;
the role of open spaces in the city as an “ecosystem”;
Ecological infrastructures, green networks and ecosystem services.

Extended Syllabus

Of the 17 objectives of the Sustainable Development Agenda, the course will address objectives 11: "Making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, long-lasting and sustainable"; 13: “Promote actions, at all levels, to combat climate change”; and 15: "Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of the terrestrial ecosystem".

Teaching Methods

Teaching methods
From a methodological point of view, the course is structured in two modules:
A) Theoretical teaching module: it is structured in four didactic cycles, in which the following are treated respectively:
1. geographic and landscape analysis of urban and metropolitan contexts;
2. the themes of the relationship between project and context, developed with reference to the operations of extraction of the sense of place, and the assessment of urban and environmental transformability;
3. the relationship between project and structure, with reference to the operations of interpretation of the existing, anticipation of possible futures, configuration of settlement structures and infrastructural networks;
4. the relationship between design and conformation, relating to the use of the different ways of physical and functional organization of the settlement forms.

B) Design exercise module: it is intended for the elaboration of a proposal in which the single interpretative and conformation operations of the physical spaces reproduce the main stages of the design process.
In particular, the exercises deal with the following themes, to which specific thematic maps correspond:
1. Interpretation of the context: the sense of places; conditions of transformability; ongoing or planned projects; prospective scenarios
2. Existing structure: settlement system, infrastructure system, environmental system
3. Plan structure: settlement system, infrastructure system, environmental system
4. Proposed configuration: the coherence framework for transformation projects.

The exercise deals with the following phases, to be returned with the documents indicated below:
Phase 1: Interpretation of the context and analysis of the urban planning tools in force (Paper to be produced: Book format 297 x 297 mm);
Phase 2: Concept and project master plan (1: 10,000; 1: 5,000); (Document to be produced: 1 or more tables in A1 format);
Phase 3: Plan and axonometry of the project proposal accompanied by urban planning data and parameters (1: 2.000; 1: 1.000) (Document to be produced: 1 or more tables in A1 format + 1 plastic scale 1: 2.000)

The course promotes interdisciplinarity and for this purpose the teacher's lessons will be accompanied by a series of lessons delivered by a visiting professor who teaches Urban Geography at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. In addition, the guests of the “Cities of the World” lectures will be chosen by favoring other scientific disciplines.

From a practical point of view, the course will use the following teaching methods:
- ex cathedra lectures by the teacher and visiting professor;
- series of lectures given by international guests on cities around the world;
- group visit to the project application area;
- exercise on urban analysis of cities;
- group work concerning the urban planning of an urban area selected by the teacher;
- collegial discussions after the seminars;
- collective reviews with projection of group work and discussion with teachers and tutors.

There will be exercises in reading essays and subsequent discussion, presentations, group work. All activities will be conducted with the aid of useful tools to encourage students' self-assessment as a function of strengthening the transversal skills indicated in: Expected learning outcomes. The methods of teaching imply constant participation in the lessons.

Methods for verifying learning.
The teaching module foresees two partial evaluations in itinere: the first partial evaluation (with a summary judgment of merit: A, B and C) relates to the product developed (information dossier) by each group of students on the assigned city. The second relates to the discussion of the progress of the project (year exercise) which takes place in the middle of the semester. This too is a synthetic evaluation that places the work in three classes of merit A-B-C.

The examination session consists of two distinct moments: the first relates to the presentation and group discussion of the project results. This is a collegial moment, carried out with the help of colleagues who, assuming the role of guest critic, allow the teachers and tutors of the course to observe the results of their students' work with detachment. All the members of the group present their work respecting the speaking shifts and responding to the critical solicitations that will be moved by the guest critics. The teacher then evaluates the whole work considering the following aspects:
Ability of the project to meet the needs indicated during the course;
Ability of the project to deal with the critical issues found in the urban analysis;
Morphological and aesthetic quality of the design solution and its insertion in the urban context;
Quality of the representation of the design solution;
Individual ability to present the contents of the project with properties of language and ability to synthesize.

the second is an individual oral test which aims to verify the level of knowledge acquired in the teaching modules of the Laboratory.
The oral exam consists of three questions on topics chosen by the teacher (among those dealt with in the lessons and on the reference texts) aimed at verifying learning, conceptual mastery, language properties and the ability to interpret and synthesize in this regard. to the following areas:
- Basic knowledge related to the analysis of the city and the territory;
- Knowledge of urban phenomena in their evolution and complexity;
- Ability to manage the criticalities of urban and territorial systems;
- Ability to understand the planning methodology from the urban to the territorial scale.

The topics covered by the oral examination are those dealt with by the teacher in ex cathedra lessons and by the visiting professor in seminars and also those present in the reference texts.
The final mark, expressed out of thirty, will be the arithmetic average between the mark reported in the discussion (expressed in thirty) of the project documents and the mark reported in the oral exam (expressed in thirty).
The partial assessments obtained by the student contribute to the determination of the final merit range of the Laboratory exam.
The oral exam can also be taken before discussing the project, however, it is recommended that you take the test on the papers first and then the test on the theoretical preparation.
The two tests will take place over two or more separate days, allowing students to have a few days between one test and another to concentrate on theoretical preparation.

Contacts/More Information

The lessons, exercises and reviews will take place in the first semester of the A.Y. 2021/2022, with the possibility of meetings by appointment to assist students who fail to take the exam in the first session.
Attendance to the teaching activities of the course is mandatory and constitutes a guarantee of admission to taking the exam within the semester.
Students are allowed to take the exam individually or in groups of up to 3 people.

The course takes place from October to December and lasts a total of 100 hours, of which 36 provided by the visiting professor, which will be divided into different training moments which can be summarized as follows:
- Organizational activities (explanation of the program; delivery of preparatory materials; activation of the Teams platform; etc.): 4 hours
- Visit to the study area and return of the perceptual analysis to the classroom: 4 hours
- Ex cathedra frontal lessons: 26 hours
- Frontal lectures by the visiting professor: 16 hours
- Lectures by international guests and discussion of students' papers: 8 hours
- Practical workshop with the assistance of the teacher and the visiting professed (V.P.): 28 total hours of which 16 with the V.P.
- Mid-term review: 4 hours
- Discussion in the classroom: 10 hours

The lectures are supported by presentations (ppt) with graphic illustrations, urban maps, photographs, videos, and involve interaction between teachers and students through case study discussions.
The laboratory exercises provide for the active participation of students and include practical activities such as freehand drawing, creation of analysis books and scale models of the urban study context.
