Objectives

The educational objectives of the annual course are the development of specific skills in accordance with the specific needs of the course of studies L12. Special emphasis will be placed on textual and translatological skills intended as an awareness of the syntactical, lexical, semantic, pragmatic and cultural aspects of a text in terms of contrastive analysis and stylistic consistency. The learners can reuse the structures and vocabulary they already possess and achieve further structures of the German language in order to consolidate the written skills and develop a methodology to deal with the translation of texts of several types.

From a linguistic point of view, the course aims to provide the necessary tools to reach level B1 + of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages by developing the four basic skills in an integrated way (comprehension and production of written texts, oral comprehension and expression):
Learners can understand the main elements in a clear speech in standard language on familiar topics and are able to understand descriptions of events and written texts of everyday use related to the everyday sphere. They are also able to participate, without being prepared, in conversations about familiar topics, of personal interest or concerning daily life and to motivate and explain opinions and projects. They manage to tell a story and the plot of a book or film and describe their impressions. Furthermore they manage to write coherent texts on topics known to them or of interest to them.

Contents

The course has a dual purpose: in Module I the course aims to consolidating and deepening the German language skills in terms of comprehension and written and oral production. In Module II, the emphasis will be placed on translations from Italian to German and from German to Italian.
The functional characteristics of the language and the trends of contemporary German (lexical plan, lexical innovation determined by the diffusion of new technologies etc.) will be studied in deep through the analysis and translation of authentic topical, literary and specialized texts.

Extended Syllabus

Module I - Reflection on the language at a theoretical and practical level

- Lexical study and written production of texts in German language (Arbeit mit Texten und Wortschatzerweiterung). The course offers a wide range of book covers in order to provide learners with the fundamental tools of lexical analysis and in order to enlarge their vocabulary. The rules of writing and stylistics are introduced in image description exercises. The course is based on a teacher-centred-teaching, which includes hours of tutorial (reading, conversation, exercises etc.) and lektorship (CEL).

Module II - Translation from German to Italian and from Italian to German

- Introduction to Translation - theories and techniques: Comparison of theories and methodologies; text linguistics and the pragmatic dimension (Übersetzungsorientierte Texttypologie nach Katharina Reiß); analysis of typical errors.

- Introduction to Translation (from German to Italian) - practice : reuse of the structures and vocabulary which the students already possess in view of text comprehension and production through the treatment of book covers which are suitable for both, an analysis of the basic structures of the German language and translation practice.

- Introduction to Translation (from Italian to German) - practice : development and deepening of the fundamental structures of the German language in order to consolidate written skills and to develop a methodology that allows to deal with the translation of book covers of increasing difficulty . Moreover, so-called "parallel texts" will be used in order to allow a comparison of different translation solutions.

Since this annual course is closely linked to social, political and economic circumstances, more teaching material will be provided from week to week during the lessons. Non-attending students have the possibility to retrieve the didactic material during the hours of reception.

Teaching Methods

Within the annual course the following teaching methods are provided:

- teacher-centred-teaching
- groupwork
- tutorial during the lessons (reading comprehension and text analysis)
- homework (translations from German to Italian and from Italian to German)
- lektorship (CEL)

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

- Written exams (literary creations in German language, translations from Italian to German and from German to Italian). The exams are held during the year or in the examination dates established after the teaching period. The duration of each written test is 180 minutes.

- The final exam is an oral exam (the results of the written part will be considered). The examination dates and times are published to the web.

-Attendance of the CEL exercises is strongly recommended in order to reach the levels of language proficiency required by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and to pass the final exam of Language .

Before accessing the exam with the professor, students will take the test provided by the lecturer according to the procedures established by the CLA. During the final exam, the professor will take into account the result achieved in formulating the final evaluation.
