Basic knowledge of public law and the principles of criminal law and trial (perfectly acquireable in the course of "Crime and investigation" foreseen in the first year of the interclass).
If necessary, the teacher will organize review/deepening seminars on institutional notions useful for enhancing the topics of the course.

Objectives

MAIN KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED: the course aims to examine old and new investigative tools, with particular reference to the activities carried out on the crime scene, outlining methods of research and crystallization of the evidence, which guarantee their usability in future judgement, the demonstrative reliability and exhaustiveness with respect to the themes emerging from the crime report.
MAIN SKILLS ACQUIRED: the student will draw from the course the ability to evaluate the most suitable investigative activities in relation to the single crime scene. He will also know both the typical investigation activities - such as the inspection - and the so-called atypical, such as video recordings using drones, or facial recognition using software.

Contents

The outcomes of criminal proceedings - indeed, their own ability to reconstruct what happened - are played out from the very first moments of the investigation. The error or insufficient verification during the investigative phase produce potentially harmful effects for the entire subsequent development of the procedural affair, until reaching the extreme outcome of the judicial error and the conviction of the innocent. Conversely, the poor quality of the investigations can also translate into the violation of the State's activation obligations to protect the victims. In this panorama and for a large number of crimes, crime scene investigations are a crucial point.

Teaching Methods

Attendance is optional, but highly recommended, taking into account the fact that many frontal lessons require, due to the very nature of the course, constant teacher/student interaction, called, for example, to examine photos, videos or other material extracted from 'investigation. The course is divided into 40 hours of lessons, including the carrying out of supplementary seminar activities, which will be held by Lt. Col. Cataldo Pantaleo, Commander of the CC Investigative Nucleus of Milan, with particular reference to crime scene examination techniques.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Oral test with questions on the recommended texts.
