Prerequisites:

Students are required to have knowledge of English at B2 Level, according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), in order to understand and assimilate the concepts introduced during the course.
In order to undertake the exam, students must have passed the English Language and Translation exam II (2nd year) and Mediation I.

Objectives

OBJECTIVES
In line with the CdS purposes, its professional profiles and employment opportunities, the course provides students with tools and methodologies enabling them to perform translation, interpreting and intercultural mediation tasks and to produce written texts in a foreign language.

The linguistic mediation module will focus on selective listening in order for students to increase their ability to concentrate and memorise and summarise information. Attention is also given to improving the production and reproduction of oral texts in both languages - in particular in relation to lexical variety and voice projection (adequate intonation), and the main features of speech and mediated speech.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
Students are expected to achieve a B2+ Level in the English Language, according to the CEFR (European Framework of Reference for Languages). Furthermore, they must acquire the necessary linguistic and communicative skills, and be familiar with the key issues related to intercultural and interlingual mediation in different contexts. They will have to apply translation strategies in texts of different typologies, demonstrate competence in contrastive analysis and metalinguistic awareness.

Module 1 (7CFU): Language and Translation [Prof.ssa Emanuela Ettorre]
This course on Ecolinguistics provides a theoretical framework and practical tools for revealing how the dominant discourses of our unsustainable industrial civilization promote ecologically destructive behaviour. Students will analyse a wide range of texts from advertisements, lifestyle magazines and economics textbooks to literary texts. In each case, the question is whether the stories that underlie texts allow us to identify consumerist and destructive discourses, or encourage us to care about people and the ecosystems that life depends on. Part of the module will therefore consider the theoretical and practical issues in order to conduct what J. R. Martin defines as Positive Discourse Analysis within ecolinguistics
The course is based on Arran Stibbe’s Ecolinguistics: Language, Ecology and the Stories We Live By, Routledge, 2021) in order to reveal the stories that support unequal and unsustainable societies and search for inspirational forms of language that can help rebuild a more ecological world. It describes eight types of ‘stories we live by’: ideologies, framings, metaphors, evaluations, identities, convictions, erasure and salience. These stories are cognitive, as they belong to people’s mind, but they also manifest themselves in distinctive patterns of language. The aim of ecolinguistics is to analyse these patterns, reveal the ‘stories we live by’, and open them to a critical investigation.
This module also aims to introduce students to some of the key concepts of translation theory (equivalence, functionalist and descriptive approaches, translation and culture). Students will be shown how to apply translation strategies, instrument and resources in translating literary and non literary texts from English into Italian and from Italian into English, with particular attention to the discourses about ecology.
MODULE 2 (6CFU): LINGUISTIC MEDIATION [Dr. Lia D'Antonio]
The mediation module aims at consolidating acquired language skills and strengthening the
ability to manage discursive interaction and oral production.

Extended Syllabus

LINGUISTIC MEDIATION MODULE
The module proposes simulations of triadic bilingual exchanges, as occurring every day in both private and professional contexts, as well as exercises aimed at enriching the relevant vocabulary. Ethical considerations relating to the mediator’s role will also be discussed. Mediation training will also cover oral production for presentations and speeches. Note-taking techniques will be presented as part of this activity. The lessons will consist of exercises of various kinds, in pairs and in small groups. The main methods include dialogic lessons with listening comprehension tasks (interviews), role-plays, and debates on issues related to intercultural communication, negotiation and migration. For the purposes of the oral exam, the special languages involved relate to technical and scientific as well as economic and legal settings.

Teaching Methods

The course includes the following activities:
1) Lectures held by professor Emanuela Ettorre (Module 1) starting from October 2022. Mediation Classes will start in the second semester and will be held by Dr. Lia D'Antonio (Module 2).
2) Tutorials and other activities held by the linguistic experts of the CLA, based on oral and written skills in order to strengthen the abilities for acquiring the B2+ Level.

Verification of learning:

EXAM ORGANISATION
The final exam consists of a written test and of an oral one. The written part of the Language and Translation Module is structured as follows:
1) Translation of two texts, one from Italian into English and the other from English into Italian;
2) three open questions concerning topics of the texts analyzed during the course;
Mediation module: exam consisting of a listening comprehension test and dialogue interpreting (from or into English).
The topics and terminology for the listening comprehension and the role-play tests, can be gathered and studied in Talent 3 and Dire, Fare e Tradurre.
Assessment of proficiency in the English Language according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages at B2+ Level by linguistic experts of the CLA.
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT
The written test is to be assessed in thirtieths, and the results will be published on the Department website. The final mark will be given after an oral test, to be taken in English, on the subject discussed during the course. To access the final oral test students must have passed the written text. Online registration is mandatory for both tests (via the ESSE 3 online platform).
Written tests are held on a regular basis only once for each exam session; oral tests take place twice for each of the three sessions (summer, autumn, extraordinary). Students who reach a solid linguistic and metalinguistic competence will obtain an excellent evaluation.
