Prerequisites:

Students who have not taken the examination for Medieval Archaeology during the three-year course should pass an oral examination about general issues concerning Medieval Archaeology.

Objectives

The course intends to broaden and deepen the knowledge about Christian and Medieval archaeology, focusing on specific themes that are central to the scientific debate and which offer to students methods and tools to lead their research independently.

Contents

The course is organized in two modules: the first one is aimed at reconstructing the building techniques and building cycles between the IV and IX Centuries through the study of architecture archaeology. The second module deals with the Abruzzi region during the Longobard period, materials and settlements in a border region.

Extended Syllabus

First module (3CFU) – Archaeology of built-up centres. Building techniques and building cycles between the IV and IX Centuries. The module is aimed at showing the changes and transformations of construction sites during the transition period between Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages through the archaeological documents regarding religious, civilian and housing aspects.
Second module (6CFU) – The Abruzzi region during the Longobard period. Materials and settlements in a border region. This module thanks to its systematic analysis of archaeological data and historiography of the region intends to reconstruct the territorial structure in the Abruzzi region during the Longobard reign.

Teaching Methods

The course is structured in two educational modules: a first 3 CFU module and a second 6 CFU module. Both modules include: frontal lessons, visits to archaeological areas and museums, conferences and workshops on specific aspects of this discipline.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The examination is based on an interview where the student is expected to expound critically the issues addressed during the course. Archaeology students are also expected to comment on a scientific contribution assigned during the lessons.

Lesson attendance is highly recommended. In case of justified and documented inability to attend the course, the syllabus should be agreed upon with the course professor.
All the educational materials useful for taking the examination which are not available from the “Paratore” library or through the usual sales channels will be available from the University’s e-learning platform.

Art History students who should take the examination for the 6 CFU must attend the second module.

Students who in previous courses have never taken the examination for Medieval Archaeology, should follow the specific syllabus available from the University’s e-learning platform.
