Objectives

The module aims at supplying students with appropriate technical and linguistic tools, in order to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to best perform a dialogical interpretation.

The main knowledge and skills to be achieved are:

-a) improving oral comprehension in Italian and English;

-b) learning interpretative strategies functional to different situations and communicative contexts, with particular attention to language register and style;

-c) deepening the knowledge related to the culture of the English-speaking countries;

-d) reflecting on ethical / professional issues relating to linguistic-cultural mediation;

-e) mastering the specific terminology in the semantic fields that will be introduced during the courses;

-f) fathoming the micro-languages of the most recurrent situations in contexts of linguistic mediation "for special purposes".

Contents

The linguistic mediation module is aimed at strengthening students' oral skills in Italian and English and introducing them to dialogic interpretation.

The contents include:

-1) the analysis and the study of techniques and methods of interpretation;

-2) the practice of different means of cultural linguistic mediation;

-3) outline of the history of mediation;

-4) the analysis of the professional profiles of the mediator and his linguistic and behavioural competences;

-5) mediation in television;

-6) judicial mediation;

-7) mediation in schools.

Single module.

Listening and reformulation exercises Italian-Italian, English-English, Italian-English and English-Italian through the use of audiovisual material, authentic documents, role plays.

This process will involve first of all learning about the varieties of English of speakers belonging or not to the English-speaking world, thus succeeding in grasping and overcoming the differences in accent and morphology / lexicon / syntax, which can put communication at risk.

Contents will focus on current issues and / or issues related to specific areas of work; they will not be limited to contexts and customs typical of English-speaking countries, but cases will be proposed in which English acts as a global lingua franca.

Teaching Methods

- Lectures on theory and historical notes on mediation and interpretation;

- Drafting of thematic bilingual glossaries and analysis of various linguistic registers;

- Presentation by students of short reports and / or implementation of simulations or role plays on previously defined topics;
- Simulations in situations very close to the professional reality;

- Practical exercises in memorization, sight translation, shadowing, parroting; whispered, consecutive, simultaneous interpretation;
- Problem solving;

- Development of synthesis skills;

- Listening exercises (B2 Level);

- Lectures and linguistic exercises carried out by English native speakers from CLA.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The exam consists of three steps designed to verify comprehension and mediation skills.

Step 1. Practice listening test.
The test will last 45 minutes. The test includes 4 listening exercises with a battery of 30 questions with multiple choice answers, matching and cloze tests (level B2). Examinees are eligible to sept 2 only if they successfully pass this test.

Step 2. Theoretical / dialogic oral test.
Discussion in English and Italian of the topics covered in class and reported in the video, papers and multimedia materials provided by the teacher and available in the texts and chapters cited in this Syllabus. See extended program.

Step 3. Practical test.
The test consists of three practical exercises: parroting exercise from English to English; simultaneous and / or consecutive interpretation in passive mode, sight-translation in passive mode.

All three tests will be performed on the same day where possible based on the number of examinees.
