Prerequisites:

Pre-requisite for the the examination is the in-depth knowledge of the macroscopic and microscopic normal anatomy as well as the mastery of the main notions related to the physiology of the organs and systems of the human body.

Objectives

The aim of the integrated course of Anatomic Pathology is to provide the etiopathogenetic, morphological (macroscopic and microscopic
aspects) and functional bases of the pathological processes involving the different tissues, organs and systems.
The knowledge of these bases, integrated with clinical aspects, is fundamental for a correct decision-making process in both internal medicine and surgery.
In particular, the course aims to provide useful tools for the interpretation of the pathological report, which is fundamental for an appropriate therapeutic approach.

Contents

Gynecological Pathology (uterus and ovaries)

Extended Syllabus

Body of uterus and endometrium. Endometrial histology in the menstrual cycle. Functional endometrial disorders (dysfunctional uterine bleeding). Anovulatory cycle. Inflammatory disorders: acute and chronic endometritis. Endometriosis and adenomyosis. Endometrial polyps. Endometrial hyperplasia. Malignant tumors of the endometrium. Endometrial cancer: endometrioid and serous. Carcinosarcoma. Tumors of endometrial stroma. Adenosarcoma. Stromal tumors. Myometrial tumors. Leiomyoma. Leiomyosarcoma.
Ovaries. Non-neoplastic and functional cysts. Polycystic ovaries and stromal hyperthecosis.
Ovarian tumors. Clinical course, pathogenesis, macroscopic and microscopic morphological features. Epithelial tumors (serous, mucinous, endometrioid, clear cell, cystadenofibroma, transitional cell).
Germ cell tumors (teratoma, dysgerminoma, yolk sac tumor, choriocarcinoma, other germ cell tumors). Sex cord-stromal tumors (granulosa cell tumors, fibromas, thecomas, fibro-thecomas, Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors, other sex cords-stromal tumors). Metastatic tumors.

Teaching Methods

The teaching activities are organized using a combination of several approaches: lectures, in-depth lessons, (elective teaching) and short term internships. The teaching strategy includes a complete iconography of macroscopic and microscopic lesions. Sometimes video will be utilized.
Depending on the needs, interactive methods are also used. The teaching strategy is constantly evaluated and modulated by the teachers on the basis of the results of the learning checks (oral exams).

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The assessment of learning is carried out by an oral examination.
To pass the exam, the student must demonstrate that he / she possesses a detailed knowledge of normal macroscopic and microscopic anatomy, notions of physiology of organs and apparatuses, and basic knowledge of the pathologies covered by the course.
In particular, for each pathology the student must demonstrate knowledge of: epidemiology, pathogenic mechanisms, main macroscopic and histological characteristics of the lesions, prognostic and predictive factors, therapeutic approaches concerning any related biomarkers and prognosis. Pathological classifications will be required in the perspective of a correct therapeutic and prognostic framework.
The student must also demonstrate the ability to perform the necessary reasoning to carry out differential diagnoses in the various fields of human pathology.
The determination of the final score takes therefore into account logical skills and the use of an appropriate language.
