Prerequisites:

In order to access this class, students need to have oral and written comprehension and production skills corresponding to Level C1.1 of CEFR for Spanish. In order to sit the oral exam for this class, students must have passed the 1st year exam of Spanish Language and Translation.

Objectives

At the end of the course, students will:
- have acquired the reading and oral comprehension skills, as well as the writing and speaking skills of C1.2 level, and a metalinguistic knowledge of C1.2 level
- have acquired the main notions developed within the fields of text linguistics (text functions), semantics (semantic relations) and pragmatics (theory of speech acts, politeness theory) with a view to introducing the notions necessary for describing functional variation in texts.
- have acquired practical skills relating to the analysis, composition drafting and translation of texts belonging to certain (written and oral) genres typical of corporate communication, with particular attention to digital genres.
- Acquisition of the documentation skills needed for the translation (from and into Spanish) of corporate communication texts (mono- and bilingual dictionaries, glossaries and termbases, language corpora, machine translation)

Contents

The class aims at the acquisition of the C1.2 level of the CEFR and the metalinguistic skills associated with this level. It offers an overview of the theoretical notions needed for the text analysis of some genres typical of corporate communication.
The theoretical sessions will illustrate the main concepts developed within the fields of text linguistics (text functions), semantics (semantic relations) and pragmatics (theory of speech acts, politeness theory) with a view to introducing the notions necessary for describing functional variation in texts.
In the practical sessions these theoretical concepts will be exploited in practical activities and exercises aimed at the analysis, composition and translation (Spanish into Italian, and viceversa) of texts belonging to (written and oral) genres typical of corporate communication, with particular attention to digital genres. The sessions on translation will focus on tools and techniques of documentation for specialised translation, with practical applications aimed at the use of (mono- and bilingual) dictionaries, glossaries and termbases, language corpora and machine translation.

LECTOR SESSIONS
The language skills of the level C1.2 are developed and practiced during the practical sessions with the lector(s). Attendance of these sessions is therefore essential in order to reach the target language level and for oral and written exam preparation. All information regarding lector sessions are available on cla.unich.it. Information about the coursebook and further material used during lector sessions will be provided by the lectors.
Students are also encouraged to sit the C1.2 proficiency tests organized by the Centro Linguistico di Ateneo.
EXAM
Final assessment consists of a written and an oral exam. Written and oral exams can be sat in different sessions (summer, fall, winter). Students access the oral exam only after passing the written exam. Both parts will need to be passed before the winter session (January/February 2025) in order to officially register the final result. The written exam is valid until the winter session (January/February 2025).
WRITTEN EXAM
Includes:
1) text analysis of a short text belonging to a genre of corporate communication
2) composition of a short text belonging to a genre of corporate communication
3) translation (from and into Spanish) of a short text belonging to a genre of corporate communication
ORAL EXAM
The oral exam consists of:
- brief (2 minutes) elevator pitch presenting a product, a project or a professional profile
- conversation on 2 books chosen by the student among the following list:

Teaching Methods

The course consists of: (a) classes held by the instructor(s); (b) practical sessions held by the lector(s).

The classes offered by the instructor(s) are both lectures (aimed at providing the necessary theoretical background) and seminars (with students' active participation).

The practical sessions with the lector(s) are highly interactive and are necessary to acquire the language skills needed to successfully complete the final exam.

For these reasons, attendance of both the instructors' and lectors' classes is strongly recommended.

SYLLABUS VALIDITY
The syllabus is valid for the whole 2023/2024 academic year (until the exam session of January/February 2025). For the final grade to be officially registered, students must have successfully completed all the parts of the exam by the last session of the 2023-2024 academic year.

NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS
The syllabus is the same for all students, whether attending or not: non-attending students will autonomously revise and practice the contents of the bibliography, possibly integrating it with the additional recommended reference material.
