English Language: Fundamentals of phonetics/phonology, and morphology.
The module will introduce the principles of English phonetics and morphology, and focus on Standard British and American English, RP and GenAm, as well as on different dimensions of language variation, with regard to Cockney, Estuary English. The phenomen of English as a Lingua Franca will also be discussed in terms of its impact in a teaching context.

Present simple and continuous Verb patterns –ing / infinitive. Present perfect and past simple. Comparisons
Narrative forms.
Past continuous tense and past perfect tense. Past Perfect Continuous tense.
Countable and uncountable nouns. Expressions of quantity.
Passive forms.
Future forms.(4)
Future continuous and future perfect tense.
Modal verbs of possibility and certainty
Reporting verbs, statements, questions and imperatives.
Conditional forms 1st 2nd 3rd type. Hypothetical meaning: wish, if only.
Modal verbs with obligation, prohibition and necessity. Ability.

Relative clauses
Use of English activities, word formation and open cloze, multiple choice cloze tests. Phrasal verbs, sentence transformation, collocations and expressions. Listening activities with multiple choice and filling the gaps. Sentence completion.
Comprehension questions and learning to summarize content. Speaking: collaborative tasks, ranking, comparing, agreeing and disagreeing , giving reasons. Stating preferences, interviewing and responding. Discussion and compensating strategies ,Suggesting and offering .Expressing critical thinking and opinions. Describing similarities and differences ,techniques for persuading, Hypothesizing.
In the second term, the lettorato classes run by Adua Paciocco will cover paragraph writing, namely the theory and practice for effective paragraphs.
