Prerequisites:

Knowledge of basic concepts of paleontology (eg biostratigraphic units, main groups of organisms, such as benthic and planktonic foraminifera, radiolarians, corals, sponges and mollusks, especially rudists, etc.), stratigraphy (eg stratigraphic units, Walter's law and other principles of stratigraphy), sedimentology (concepts of facies and depositional environments, main types of deposits) and geology (eg Wilson's cycle and related processes)

Objectives

Educational objectives: the course aims to provide the tools and knowledge for the understanding and analysis of sedimentary rocks and in particular for carbonates. With this aim the knowledge, methods and tools are provided for: 1. the understanding of the processes that govern the formation of carbonate rocks; 2. the recognition of the products resulting from the their formation processes; 3. the evaluation of sedimentary processes and products in the regional geological evolutionary context.
Expected learning outcomes: At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
1. recognize the different types of carbonate rocks, applying the various existing classifications;
2. insert the types of carbonate rocks in their depositional context;
3. recognize the different types of carbonate platforms and their geometric-depositional characteristics;
4. Apply the basic concepts of sequence stratigraphy;
5. Recognize the characteristics of successions and their relationships with the main geological processes.

Extended Syllabus

1. Classification of carbonate rocks: nature and components of carbonate rocks; main classifications of carbonate rocks (Folk, Dunham, Embry and Klovan). This module is accompanied by the analysis of thin sections with the aim of applying the aforementioned classifications and recognizing the different types of components, facies and textures.
2. Carbonate platforms classification: morphological and genetic classifications. Application to some examples of Mediterranean platforms.
3. Sequence stratigraphy. Basic concepts of sequence stratigraphy. Depositional sequences as a tool for the reconstruction of the depositional dynamics; megasequences stratigraphy as a tool for subdividing the filling of a basin in relation to the main evolutionary processes.
4. Stratigraphic evolution of Apennines and Adriatic foreland. Analysis of the main characteristics of the shallow water and basin, siliciclastic and carbonate successions of central Italy and their framing in the geodynamic and paleogeographic evolution, from the opening of the Alpine Tethys to the construction of the thrust belt.

Teaching Methods

The course is mainly carried out through lectures, integrated with individual and group exercises. During the course there are 2 excursions at the end of the course which have the purpose of conveying and testing the notions acquired during the course through their application to the outcrops.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The exam consists of an oral test, during which the student will have to demonstrate that he has understood the various topics covered during the course, through their application on the basis of questions that will tend to cross the concepts and notions provided for the different topics.
