Prerequisites:

General and applied to the environment physiology.
It is advisable to have already acquired the basics of Pharmacology.

Objectives

The aim of the course will be to understand the toxicity from environmental contaminants. The course divided into two modules. In the General Toxicology module, the basis will be provided for understanding and evaluating the toxicity of drugs and other substances. In the module of Special Toxicology will be treated the main classes of toxic environmental, industrial, food and agricultural compounds.

Contents

Module: GENERAL TOXICOLOGY 4 ECTS
Definition of toxic substance and toxin. Selective toxicity. Immediate versus delayed toxicity. Local versus systemic toxicity. Reversible versus irreversible toxic effects. Environmental toxicity: toxicant accumulation and bioaccumulation.
Interactions between toxicants and drugs: additive toxicity, synergic toxicity. Antidotes and antagonists. Toxicity and risk. Gradual and quantal dose-response relationships.
LD50. Therapeutic index. Margin of safety. Acute, subacute, subchronic and chronic toxicity testing. Developmental and reproductive
Toxicity. NOAEL, LOAEL, Acceptable daily intake (ADI), Threshold limit value (TLV), Permissible exposure limit (PEL).
Allergic reactions. Anaphylactoid reactions. Idiosyncratic reactions. Disposition of toxicants: absorption, distribution, and excretion of toxicants; biotransformation of xenobiotics.
Mechanisms of toxicity.
Chemical carcinogenesis.
Toxic responses of the liver.
Toxic responses of the kidney.
Toxic responses of the respiratory system.
Toxic responses of the nervous system.
Toxic responses of the ocular system.

Module: SPECIAL TOXICOLOGY 4 ECTS Pesticide toxicity. Chlorinated pesticides, organophosphorus insecticides, and carbamates, pyrethroids, fungicides, herbicides, herbicides, toxicity of pesticide residues in food, Toxic substances in food: Nitrosamines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons Poisoning by metals, metals and metalloids, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, mercury, lead, aluminum, nickel, selenium. Inorganic Compounds, Carbon Monoxide Poisoning, Nitrates and Nitrites, Silica, Asbestos, Sulfuric Acid Saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, dioxins and polychlorinated benzofurans Organo-oxygen compounds, Alcohol, methanol, bisphenols, ethylene glycol, Phthalates, Acrolein Organ nitrogen compounds, Amines, Nitriles, nitro derivatives, isothiocyanates, Endocrine disruptors.

Teaching Methods

The course structured in 64 hours of study, divided into 2-hour lessons. Frontal teaching is the form of theoretical lessons in the classroom.

The exam consists of an oral test. The topics examined will reflect those covered during the teaching and present in the program. The student's personal contribution will be assessed, as well as his / her effectiveness, commitment and consistency manifested during the period of attendance
To pass the exam, it will be necessary to acquire correct, clear and concise terminology, paying attention to the possible logical connections between the topics developed during the Degree Course.
