The course aims to provide students with a historical-literary analysis of the period between the end of the 19th century and 1980. In particular, the attention will be focused on the two phases of Portuguese Modernism, on the figure and the universe of Fernando Pessoa and his heteronyms. The course will include information about the artistic and cultural movements that influenced Modernism and the entire Portuguese twentieth-century literary production, by deepening the work of authors such as Miguel Torga, Carlos de Oliveira, José Cardoso Pires and José Saramago. Furthermore, the aim of the course is to enhance and acquire critical-literary knowledge and skills, by applying them in the analysis of the proposed poems, stories and novels.
Overview of European Portuguese literature of the late 19th and 20th centuries: from the antecedents of Modernisme to the post-revolutionary era; the two phases of Portuguese Modernism: the Orpheu group and the Presença group; literature during the two modernist phases: analysis and reading of poems; overview of the work and universe of Fernando Pessoa: the Pessoa's heteronyms; Miguel Torga: themes, characteristics and analysis of the short story "Vicente"; overview of Portuguese Neorealism: "Uma Abelha na Chuva" by Carlos de Oliveira; Portuguese Post-Modernism: analysis of "O Delfim" by José Cardoso Pires; post-revolutionary literature: José Saramago and his novel "Levantado do chão".
Analysis of the Portuguese historical-literary context, between the end of the 19th century and 1980, focusing the attention on the period of the Salazar dictatorship; literary representation before, contemporary and after the Salazar dictatorship; overview of the Portuguese modernist movement, in particular, the work of Fernando Pessoa and the Pessoa's heteronyms. An overview of the Orpheu group and the Presença group will be proposed. Focusing on the existential humanism of Miguel Torga through the story "Vicente", on the neorealist novel "Uma Abelha na Chuva" by Carlos de Oliveira, on the post-modernist novel "O Delfim " by José Cardoso Pires, on the novel by José Saramago "Levantado do chão", following the fall of the Salazar dictatorial regime.

Frontal teaching and seminars.
Oral exam with final mark. The exam will consist of an oral test, partly or totally in Portuguese, at the candidate's discretion. In order to ascertain language skills, a part of the test in Portuguese is mandatory.
