Prerequisites:

Knowledge of standard Arabic (written and oral), at least elementary.

Objectives

The course aims at providing students with knowledge of Egyptian dialect and its main grammatical notions. It is expected to listen to interviews, dialogues and songs in dialect, selected on the basis of progressive difficulty. In particular, listening and analysis of lyrics, some of which written by great poets, aim to facilitate the learning of grammatical rules through their application, as well as presenting the use of local expressions. The course also aims to introduce extracts of literary works written in dialect.

Contents

The course focuses on the presentation of Egyptian dialect and it includes the introduction to Egyptian Literature written in dialect.

Extended Syllabus

The course focuses on the introduction to the main grammatical notions of Egyptian dialect, and its main differences with Modern Standard Arabic. During the course texts in Egyptian dialect with gradual and progressive difficulty will be analyzed, in addition to interviews, dialogues and songs in dialect. The course also introduces the study of literary works written in dialect.

Teaching Methods

The course is based on 60 hours of frontal teaching and includes listening to interviews, dialogues and songs in dialect, in addition to specific seminars on the topics studied during the lectures

Language tutorials organized by linguistic experts are strongly recommended.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The exam is based on a written test (dictation, short composition and exercises) and an oral interview. The total score in thirtieths will be given by the average of the marks obtained in the two respective parts.
