CULTURAL HERITAGE: ARCHAEOLOGY AND HISTORY OF ART

Objectives

To contribute to a general view for the students concerning the ancient mediterranean context, specifically looking at the interactions among cultures and peoples in the pre-classical and classical Mediterranean.

Contents

General view on the Mediterranean context in the Bronze Age and of the Aegean cultures in relationship with Egyptian, Hittite and Oriental contexts.
Art and Archaeology between 'Dark Age and beginning of Greek Art. Specific aspects of the Greek art through examples and issues. Practical section: catalogue of Greek materials.
Roman Art: Hellenism, ibridation and relationship with the provinces. Specific aspects, topics and sites for analyzing the Roman culture. Practical section: catalogue of a specific archaeological roman find and organization of a review.

Extended Syllabus

- Introduction on the Mediterranean Cultures during the Bronze Age
- Relationships of the Aegean world with Egyptian, Hittite and Oriental cultures
- Cyprus as crossing point for the Mediterranean cultures between Bronze and Iron ages.
- Issues in the management of the sites in the Oriental Mediterranean basin.
- Dark Age and/or the birth of a 'new culture'?
- Greek Art and Archaeology between Archaic and Classical periods.
- The IV century between Classic and Hellenism
- Hellenistic schools and sites
- Rome among Hellenism, Greek influence, Roman new approach.
- Some specific examples of sites, contexts, chronologies and artistic productions
